I have a really lovely 16.2tb ex point to pointer which i have been training for the last year, he is 9. He is proving very willing and the last two times has been in the lead after the dressage then having 3 poles down on the showjumping, clear x.c. At pre novice level. My trainer says he is not worth pursuing as it is a waste of my money to keep going to have poles down. I feel it is his tecnique which lets him down he just jumps without much scope, and if you are a bit wrong or sometimes right he will just tip of a pole, but more than a naturally carefull horse. But then i feel he has only been at it a year, just wondered if you have any suggestions to help.

try V poles, built like : I-A-I (I are wings, - is the upright and A is the v poles!)
to try and get him picking up his legs a little more

Training an ex race horse to jump is not somthing that should be thought of as an easy task. In order for you to get a true idea of your horses abilities, i suggest you try "lunge jumping" him over some fences. After that do as the previous post said and create some A frames to help him with his bascule over the fence, also try a placing pole befor and after a fence, both placed 3 yards away from the fence. Hope this help. PM me if you need any more help.

I agree with GabbY8tIa as this is what I had to do with my old pony to improve her technique as well as getting my 16.2 to start picking up his legs

I no it seems like a waste of money having poles down but you can get a long way even if you not going to set the world on fire and one day it will click!!

Take my boy - only ever had one clear round SJ BE and that was 2 years ago PN but this year hes been out BSJAing and has been placed at 2 out of 3 shows and has £55 act winnings!! it just takes time i think for Tbs to grow up espec if they have raced!! but we will se with mine 1st BE outing in 3 weeks on the weekend!!!

Thanks for everyones advice, will stick at it! Actually went to a show at weekend and had two DOUBLE CLEARS!! placed 4th and 6th, he must be listening!

I personally would get a different instructor, if they think you horse isn't going to be any good why pay her money. It might be that they haven't got the skills to take you any further. So go find someone else and you might be surprised what you achieve with a different person helping you
