Here's the worst bit of it...

In will come riders wearing brightly coloured polo shirts with their names emblazoned on the back, and loud music to introduce individual competitors and encourage fans to make more noise.

There will also be live interviews with the riders, dancing girls in the breaks between events – and a greater emphasis on betting, both at the venues and online.

Article should be entitled how to make SJ even more of a chavfest than it already is!!

As a 'youngster' (13), I would much rather keep to how it is now!
Dancing girls???? No thank you! No need to make the sport appeal to yet more chavs!!

please noooo. i love getting into my show jacket, it makes me feel as if the events I do are a big deal, and of course looks lovely and smart in photos!Im young and i dont want this at all booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

Jumping in polo shirts and dancing girls in between classes, yeah fecking right!

The day they start doing that shite is the day I put Olympic up for sale and give up.

could ellen push her boobs out anymore in that pic??

i really hope this is another no fact story published by the mail.
jumping in polo shirts? would make it no difference from jumping at home so imo would take the feeling of the competition away.

total corporate crap.
has micheal mac not realised that the new jackets he designed were awful?
and now this??

Bring it on - I have sat thru hour after hour of tedious boring show jumping. When a show actually has an atmosphere it is brilliant. I would love to go to a show where the crowd actually cheers.

To the die hards - don't worry I think our normal eveyday show is going to stay it's same boring self

Yes we need change, yes we need to attract more audience and Im all for better atmosphere and a bit more fun at shows. Plus some increased prizemoney would keep british riders IN britain where people can watch them

But turning it into an america football game with cheerleaders ect is just silly. Twenty20 cricket is great - but they dont have all the faff, what makes Twenty20 great is it's quick and easy to follow, the cricketers are out for big hits - a little bit like an equestrian puissance.

Vicki - I actually LOL'd at your first comment

Actually, here in Argentina at big shows there's often a band in between events. Sometimes there are relay races with the top names participating with children or carriage drivers, or 4x4s, there's side-by-side jumping (or rather, 2 people jumping identical courses side by side) Great fun! In summer, short-sleeved shirts are acceptable, with a tie (no jacket required though).

no way, in my opinion it is such a bad idea. shows are fairly formal and polo shirts just don't do it. what is the point of changing it any way?
i may only be 7 but i love it the way it is at the moment. it would just ruin it 4 me. and anyway alot of horses don't like loud noises, so it wouldn't be good for them either.

ANYTHING for SJ to become high profile and fun again, so long as it doesn't end up being ridiculed I am up for anything - as CSJ said, more venues and prize money would make me super happy!

How is this diferent to Olympia when they have the flying frenchman in the ring between classes entertaining the crowd?

They also used to have the riders names on the back of jackets in the Renault Jump series (I think) on the county show circuit.

I think this is overall a good idea, although I do like show jackets as they are, they're so smart.

I just hope they won't encourage the crowd to make noise during the round, that would be so distracting!

I can't see how polo shirts is really going to make a difference.
I think the major problem is that there are no real 'personalities' to follow anymore. In its hayday showjumping was so popular because the competitiors caught the imagination of the public. Just think Eddie Macken and bomerang, Marion coakes and stroller, harvey smith, the D'inzeo brothers...... Who is there today? Most of them seem to have had personality by-passes!! Watching the brits being interviewed after a round is as intersting a watching paint dry. The only highlight was Geoff B winning Hickstead.

Oh yeah great plan.

Shall I start screaming and shouting during Wimbledon too then? I wouldn't last long - but at least <random tennisplayer> isn't likely to break his neck at the sound of airhorns going off and confetti everywhere.

I may as well not even bother trying to get Prommy to jump, one second in an arena like that and he'll be trying to jump the perimeter fence to get out!!

I don't think it's that big a deal - riding's evolving & I'd personally love for sj to become more high profile so there was BBC coverage, for example!

Poloshirts with names on the back = great idea; get the names of great young riders burned into spectator's heads & more comfortable for the rider, too.

Music = some horses like music, it'd be "cool" if it got to the stage that horses/riders had "anthems" that everyone could relate to...

Dancing girls = seriosuly naff but y'know.

It'd be great if there wasn't this anal, pedantic attitude about how "nice" traditions are being passed on to younger riders... It's a really fun, exciting sport so they should stop trying to make it look so dull!

haha lol its so stupid i love wearing the jackets not crappy polo shirts

I am ok with entertainment it's just the 'dancing girls' phrase - so 70s cheesy, like a Miss World pageant!
It's possibly just badly written, the entertainment at olympia is very good and great for children.

I like show jackets much more than poloshirts, but I don't think that will change as the blousons didn't take off did they?

It would be great to see it on the tv more and good to make it more popular but not chavvified

Jumping in polo shirts at shows is the norm in Canada. For big classes or when sponsors are there officially, jackets are required and individual shows are able to specify a dress code.

I am surprised there is so much dislike of this idea. No, it isn't traditional but neither are most of the helmets available these days!
