why?

i mean, i know they keep flies out of horses ears, but in january, when its -5 outside , why do most of the horses competing at an indoor bsja have them on?

Some people put cotton wool in the ears and those on top to stop the horse spooking at noises.

Usually, it's just for the fashion of a colour matching saddlecloth and boots

B wears one all year round, his mane / forelock flicks forward onto his ears and it bugs the hell out of him!

They are also usefull for muffling sounds

Muffles sounds (some horses really don't like the bleepers and bells for the start, and the commentator) and looks cool (I'm not a fan unless they're really conservsative and aren't really visible).

They're only allowed in dressage if they're for stopping insects. Not allowed if they're for muffling (which they often are lol)!

Some people use for muffling sounds however for most it is just the fashion, the same as many gadgets and fluffy half pads etc. All these things have a purpose but some people just like the look.

They serve a purpose for helping with blocking out sounds! Unfortunately a lot of people think its fashion!!

Normally used for fashion, but you will find that the top riders use them for Sound muffling indoors
