Hello,

I'm new here and hope this thread is in the right section. :)

I'm a Dutch showjumper and currently still living in the Netherlands, but moving to Scotland (Glasgow) as soon as we have found a house that suits us.

My ponies are 1.45 1.46, and 1.48.
I'm wondering if in the UK it is allowed to jump ponies as a senior and if so, if there are any restrictions.

I'm jumping 2 ponies in 1.20 courses and the biggest one is now jumping 1.30 courses.

I'm sorry, but I'm completely new to all rules and guidelines about competing outside of the Netherlands. :)

Oh, if there is anyone from the Glasgow area who could tell me if there are a lot of competitions in the area, that would also be great.

Hi and welcome to the forum. My experience is limited so hope I'm not advising you incorrectly but don't think there are restrictions. We loaned our 146cm Connie a while ago, his loaners registered him to jump seniors as more choice of competitions (I'm in Southeast). I think your only problem would be if you ever wanted to sell to a junior rider who would find it very difficult to get pony re registered for juniors. Good luck, your ponies sound awesome.

Welcome!

Showjumping in the UK is split into juniors and seniors, not horses and ponies. Regardless of the height of your ponies, if you are a senior rider they must compete in the senior division (with striding set for horses, I'm afraid).

I dont SJ, but i think a rule came in not long ago which banned ponies from competing in seniors? Someone with a bit more knowledge should be along soon, but i'm pretty sure there is now a minimum height restriction to compete as a senior

Just found the new rule here . . .

So as your ponies are over 142cm you should be fine to compete in senior classes - provided you are the correct age

Re: this - unless they've changed it, the rule used to be that you couldn't re-register in the same calendar year from horses to ponies so the purchaser would have to wait until the following January.

think you would need to register your pony as a horse to jump BSJ seniors? I would give them a call and ask - they're generally pretty helpful.

I'm based in Glasgow and there are quite a lot of shows within about an hour's drive - there's Ingliston, Morris, Muirmill, SNEC, Blue Ridge, Highfield at Howe... I'm sure there are more but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. 🙂

Thank you all for the replies.

It's the same here, after your 18th birthday you must jump between the horse and horse strides.
But it has never really been a problem with my ponies.

So there is no rule regarding the maximum height you can jump with a pony jumping in seniors?
Got no idea how high the fences are in British Showjumping.

That's great, thanks. :)

How's livery in the Glasgow area? Do most stables have a massive waiting list or is it not too bad?
I'm looking for full livery.

I've only been on two yards since I moved my horses over to the UK so I really don't know about waiting lists.

There are a number of yards that offer full livery - facilities and price can vary significantly, though. My boys are all on full livery at the moment but our full is considered schooling livery at most yards.

Whereabouts in Glasgow are you going to be based?
I know the Renfrewshire area but can ask around if you let me know whereabouts you're looking. 😊

Unaffiliated no problem.

BS a senior can jump a pony but it will be in the horse classes. I've jumped my ponies at BS club shows in the pony classes as a senior as well which is slightly confusing but apparently correct.

You can jump it as a horse then get it measured as a pony for a junior to ride, but I don't think it can then be a horse again from what I've been told.

As far as I know, there's no limit on which height (seniors/horse) classes a pony can be entered in - the only limitation is pony's scope/stride!

Thank you all for the replies.

Now, I have a questions about the "points" I keep finding on the BS website, I just can't find any details on these points.
It states you need x amount of points to start certain classes, but how many points are / can you be given at a competition?
And how many points do you need to go up a class?

I'm sorry to be such a n00b haha.:o

Not sure what area we will go for, really depends on the house and area feel.
We prefer a house that is about 10-15 minutes away from the city centre by train.

I don't mind travelling a bit for the ponies, but prefer a stable that is easy to reach as I don't think I will have the courage to drive by myself on the left side of the road, haha.

ah, it's not so bad once you get used to it - I used to regularly try to get into the car on the wrong side when I first came over. 🙈😄

Ring British Showjumping on 024 7669 8800 you cannot register a pony 142cms and under as a horse, bigger ones are fine. You will need to prove their winnings abroad and if they are over seven they will be deemed to be Grade A unless you can prove they have won less. Grade A is currently £2000 of notional winnings ( there is a scale of points awarded for various classes) and they will need to calculate where yours sit taking into account their previous winnings. There was some talk about restricting some of the novice classes to horse over 148 but I don't think that has been acted on yet.
