Hi all,
I’m completely new to BS & had a quick question about bits. Am I able to compete in BS with my horse in a Pelham?
Thankyou all.

Have you seen some of the bits and combinations the "professionals" go round in? I'm pretty sure a Pelham will be fine lol. Preferably with roundings or two reins.

If you have a horse then pretty much all bits are permitted. If you have a pony there are a few more restrictions. It is all clearly laid out in the Rule Book whichis sent to every BS member

Yes you are. You'll find the permitted bits in Rule 102, 4,5,6 & 7. But the only restriction really is this

A gag snaffle may be used. A Market Harborough rein may be used, but only with a plain snaffle, not a gag (plain snaffle which has a single joint in the middle, is of eggbutt or loose ring sides and has a smooth flat surface (therefore can be metal/vulcanite/rubber etc.).All other running or check reins and reins acting through sheaves or pulleys are prohibited in the arena.
The use of string, fine wire, twine or cord in or around a horse’s or pony’s mouth is forbidden. Properly constructed tongue guards, which are detached from the reins and bit, are permitted.

The following additional restrictions apply to pony competitors only: Correctly fitted standing and running martingales only to be used (can be used together). Any type of running reins, Market Harborough reins, hackamores, bitless bridles and combination bits are not permitted in the arena, practice area or anywhere in the immediate vicinity of the showground.

The rules relate more to the use of pulley type reins like the market harborough and to the use of obviously abusive bits - with the only additional restriction that pony riders cannot use bitless or combi bits.
