With the huge price increase in shavings I am thinking of buying a paper shredder and using newspaper, Does anyone do this? Is it soggy and nasty how badly does it stain greys coats?
Any info would help.

We use old police records.. I use it under my straw to make a dry base and my friends uses just paper.. Its cross shredded into tiny peices (much like shavings)
Its very apsorbent and what a good way of getting rid of police records.. in horse urine and excrement!

I use finely shredded paper on top of rubber matting, I find it much more absorbant and it clumps together rather than spreading around like shavings. I dont have a really thick bed as I use matting so I dont know what it would be like with a thick bed and my horse is bay so no problem with stains!
I have no problems with dust either!

I have an industrial one and it has been going stong for over 20 years .I am lucky that we now give The Times free to our customers and there are always loads left over , which I am allowed to have. It used to be hard to get enough paper when I had 4 in stables and only friends papers to use .It takes a morning of shredding to last us a week. Mine shreds straight down

Toby_Zaphod u are soo right!
I tried shredding all my old mags, newspapers & school books...three hours into it i had filled one bin liner...and broke my shredder! The blades have actually melted. Bad times!

The pony in the stable next to Ralph is on a shavings and paper mix. It looks really nice and no dramas, I can remember as a kid using it at the yard where I learnt to ride and we used to save up our papers and then spend an afternoon tearing it up......geat fun!

It was quite heavy to muck out, but then I was only 11 and that was.........a long time ago

I run a shredded paper and cardboard bedding business and i spent thousands of pounds and loads of time shreddin paper in particular, good on those that do it thereselves cos if you have the time it saves alot of money.

If anyone desperately needs shredded paper let me know, i do mainly cardboard but if there are a few takers i mite be able to organise a paper supply if anyones interested. FORUM DISCOUNT OF COURSE.
