this is probably one of my more stoopid ideas, but we have to shred an awful lot of paper in my office, (it's normal A4, printed, white and colours) and it occured to me that it might make good bedding? Maybe my thrifty head is taking over from my sensible head though. Has anyone tried it?

So long as you don't have a grey horse!
The ink does tend to run somewhat, never known a horse to react to it, but always a possibility. And inevitably, light coloured horses seem to get ink smudges on them. It does blow around the yard a bit too. But does the job perfectly well, so if you're after saving money, why not.

I use shredded paper as the base below the shavings. it acts like kitchen towel and makes mucking out much quicker and dramatically reduces the amount of pee through the rubber mat joins.

makes excellent bedding. I used to do that all the time where I used to work...although I did look rather strange belting down the motorway with a car full of black dustbin liners. If you can mix in a few old yellow pages and newspapers, its even more absorbent and you can do away with shavings altogether.

What do you do with your muckheap? Ours is taken away twice a year and he won't take paper bedding because of the ink - only straw/shavings.
