Hi.

Horse is on shavings. Shavings are expensive.

Work have offered me free cross cut shredded paper, in about an inch long strip, removed of staples... This would be used as well as shavings to bulk out his bed...

What are the pros and cons of using Shredded paper?

Thank you

Personally I hate paper. It is very heavy when wet and all sticks together. Looks nice when first put down but after a few days I hated it. Haven't mucked out a paper bed for a few years, so maybe things have changed, but friend tried paper a couple of weeks ago and she was saying how she disliked it too. Also If it is windy blows everywhere.
The paper I used was longer than 1 inch so perhaps you will get on ok with it and if it is free then there is no harm in trying it.
Good luck

Paper is very absorbant and probably one of the healthiest types of bedding because there is no dust. It is economical because it is so absorbant, so you know exactly where the wet is and dont end up throwing out dry clean bedding. There is no smell of ammonia at all with paper bedding.
The only disadvantage i know is it does blow about outside but IMO this disadvantage is outweighed by the advantages.

We use it all the time now as the local council provides it free!

It's not easy to muck out - but we find it very absorbant and if you dont put down a deep bed easier to cope with. We are lucky to have mats and it's perfect for that. We just shovel out all the dirty stuff and dont try to muck out conventionally - the whole time reminding myself that it's free!

It's a lot better around the yard than shavings or straw - it's always windy here and they made a horrible mess. It's not dusty, easy to store and handle and using it for banks is great - just be prepard to put on gloves to find the poo!

I use mixed shaving and paper as I get it from work free! I use half and half and it works well, the paper doesn't turn to papier mache when mixed in well. My bankings are huge and I have saved loads of money.

Exactly, same as me. Has saved me a fortunte.

I have a big shredder and get loads of newspapers from work so hubby has to shred one morning a week .They are very good but if you are using office paper it won't be very absorbent.I am not too keen on mixing with shavings though

I hate paper, all the horses at uni were bedded on it and it was a nightmare to muck out. I wouldn't use it, but then again if its free it may be worth the hassle!!
