Hi,

Does anyone use it? It's a (free!!) option for me for this winter but I don't know anyone who's used it.

Cheers

A couple of people at my yard use it - and i notice that it doesnt really soak up the wee - it always runs straight out under the door. its also very time consuming to prepare!! Also if you have a light coloured horse, you may find that a newspaper headline is printed onto your horse! Quite funny to see! but if you sgread it small enough this souldnt be a problem.:) Hope this helps x

A lot depends on the type of paper you use.
Newspaper, telephone directory paper etc will be a lot more absorbant than magazine (shiney) paper.
I've used it before in an American barn stable, I liked it, the yard owner wasn't convinced at first, but was quite impressed with it at the end, especially with its speed of rotting down.
I wouldn't use it where I am as it's really windy and paper is really light, so it would blow out every time I opened the stable door , my husband (YO) wouldn't be happy at all

I use paper on my dirty mare, she has rubber matting with woodchip banks (this soaks up any wee that travels under the paper) and paper in the centre.
I also get free paper and use 1 bale of woodchip a month, as she box walks I tend to remove most of the paper daily and add fresh, before I was using 4 bales of woodchips a month, so I love paper.

hiya , i use paper, straight from the courts, it absorbes wee fine, i love it

iv just started mixing it with wood pellets as i can not get hold of enough paper and its great

and best of all free!!!

yup, i love paper too really easy to skip out if your horse has to be kept in for a length of time & not hugley heavy to remove.
we used to have a chipper so it was little squares & didnt blow about too much either.

now at a yard that allows shavings or straw, not so brill on the wallet :(

Thank you, It's just office shredding, we get thru a bin bag a day and I could have as much as I wanted as my boss is currently paying for it to be disposed of!

Does it rot down quickly? The yard i'm on is a private set up at the side of the owners house and myself and a friend rent the yard and paddock but they don't want us to bed down on straw as it takes so long to rot and they don't want a massive muck heap at the bottom of their garden (can't think why???)

Thanks xx

I have used paper for my two for the last couple of years as we have a commercial shredder on site and it`s free :-) I find it easy to deal with, far less stinky than straw, and very absorbant.

What I would say is if it`s cross cut don`t bother as it gets everywhere, sticks to everything and is a nightmare to muck out!!

Same for really long shredding as it acts like spaghetti, again a complete nightmare!!

I shred a lot of my own (collected from family, neighbours and a local hotel) and find making the shreds no longer than about 12" is ideal. i.e I rip broadsheets in half before shredding and shred the little papers upright.
So if it is mainly A4 sheet size stuff and single shredded then you`d be daft not too.

I used to use it as my Dad used to run a document shredding business, cross cut in binbags. I loved it at first as it was like shavings (I had only ever had straw up to then and shavings were like the holy grail for me...!) but you do have to make sure you are particular and get all the wet stuff out every day as otherwise it lumps up and goes solid, and is almost impossible to get of the floor once it has set hard.

In terms of getting rid, we used to burn it (naughty naughty), then we found out about worm farms and donated it to a worm farm up the road instead.

It's great once you get a good big fluffy bed. I used to build it up and take the pee out once a week unless it was very very wet. That gave it a good base and made it more sturdy.

The only downside is the wet stuff can be very heavy. And on a windy day your a bit buggered!

We stopped using it as a bale of recycled stuff was costing £5-£6!
