I am moving to shropshire on thursday! Arggg! Stress! Anyway here in Essex I do a lot of teaching- currently I have 12 clients plus a school dressage/SJ team for the Interschools cup. I also judge for 3 different RC shows throughout the year as well as working full time as a teacher! (so some of the peeps on here have probably met me without realising

)

Now I am moving to a house with my own land in a part of Shrops I dont know well (Bridgnorth) and basically I dont want to loose touch with the teaching/judging.
What are/where are the good places to advertise initially? I'm hoping I can grow by Word of mouth but what are the stores/comp venues etc I can put a few small adverts out? I have been teaching for 6 years now and have a lot of experience particularly with show ponies/classical dressage so are they any places where such indoor shows take place? the local PC meet? Im fully insured etc etc so thats not an issue and willing to travel. Just dont know where on earth to start in terms of how to get my name about.

Hi shadowmonkey and Welcome to Shropshire.
Do you hunt? theres some really good hunts here and differing terrain, quite flat nd open and also steep welsh border country too.
Advertise at the Wynnstay and CCF Farmers also Charlies Stores at Welshpool. There are several independant tack shops in the area. Yellow pages is a good start for addresses.Have a look on the Pony club website for contacts too Long Mynd Bridleways association is worth join ing for contacts etc Theres Bow House livery and riding school [caroline] they have a web site and its near lydbury north. Berriewood riding school near condover and lots of other BHS places too. theres plenty going on for horse people.

All a bit far from Bridgnorth!

Welcome to Shropshire shadowmonkey! You'll be 10 miles north of me (I'm just off the Bridgnorth to Cleobury Mortimer Road.)

The Wheatland is your local hunt - see http://thewheatland.net/ - you need to register to get ALL the content - and they'll send you an e-mail newsletter with all the latest events. The kennels are about 3 miles south of Bridgnorth. Not much by way of tack shops - there's one, I think, and a couple of smallish livery yards.

PM me if you'd like to pop in and see my ponies (millions of irish draughts and sport horses) and ask about vets, farriers etc.

Welcome to Shropshire.

I'm about seven miles down the road from you in Much Wenlock. As said, the Wheatland is the local hunt along with the nearby South Shrops if you're wanting to connect with horsey people.

http://www.midarc.co.uk/ run a lot of the local shows - there's a showground just outside of Bridgnorth called Stanley Park that runs a fairly informal show each month during the summer, a yearly championship and a few winter shows too. Burwarton is of course the annual biggie and is only a few miles from Bridgnorth.

Everything Horsey is a tack shop in the centre of Bridgnorth - they have a well stocked notice board that you can contribute to.

As far as I'm aware there aren't really any indoor venues!

Berriewood, The Wyke and Kingswood are a few livery/competition venues to look in to.

Welcome to the area - coming over into the Black Country you are in the zone for the Albrighton Pony Club and the West Midlands Pony Club - they are usually looking for instructors.

Over Walsall M6 junct 7 - not as far as it sounds you have some local shows usually looking for judges - Beacon Riding Club and Sutton Coldfield. If you are willing to travel there are several tack shops in this area that advertise. If you can avoid rush hour travelling around the mids is usually quite easy but dont plan to get anywhere fast from 7.30 am until well after 9 and 3.30 until 7.
You especially want to get to SCOPE later this year, loads of ponies and loads of people - get some flyers printed.

Good luck - you never know i may come and visit for a lesson

Yes welcome - ditto black cob - Everything Horsey is local tack shop and also I think countrywide have a notice board - you could also advertise at Albrighton Feeds which is not too far. I am not far from you (no more than 5 miles) - really nice area and also local TROT ride at Dudmaston Hall. I often go along to Kingwood to read my friends dressage tests - always a popular venue. Where abouts in Bridgnorth will you be?

Welcome to Shropshire!

If you want a coffee with a local to find out more about the area or a friend for a hack, just shout

I would advertise in places like Telford Saddlery, the Wyke if they will let you, Countrywide in both Newport and Market Drayton. There might be a notice board in TFM as well, will have a look next time I'm in.

There are a few PCs near you so it's worth a call to those. I only know of the North Shrops but would assume the South Shrops have a PC too.

I guess if you compete then get out as much as possible, make an impression and have an ad on your trailer/ lorry. Also try local riding clubs... East Shrops, Maelor, Shrewsbury RC.

There is a notice board at Robinsons Cannock - and you have Rodbaston College - dont know if they are looking for instructors. What quals do you have ? The chairman of the RDA is also from around the mids, he is setting up a "world record" riding lesson - this may be something you could "advertise" and get a double whammy from.

Thanks for all these replies folks! I was worried about moving and totally loosing contact with the horsey world! I will be living in a tiny village called Middleton Scriven which is just outside of B'north. I will track down all the horsey places and pop some small adds out- Im not looking to gain a huge client base- just something to keep me focussed and 'in' with whats going on- plus I love seeing clients compete for the first time in BD/placed at their first affiliated Showing show- it feels really nice ( soppy bit)
I shall save this thread now until I get to shrops!

Oooo....I'm shrewsbury/newport way so a bit far out for you...and also a) not riding and b) can't think of anything to add to what everyone else has said....but welcome to the area

I could do with a decent instructor (with menage if poss) - I'm in Broseley about 6 miles from Bridgnorth.
Advertise in Horsy Things (I think that's what it's called - by the Severn Valley Railway in Bridgnorth) in Bridgnorth and Countrywide in Bridgnorth as well.
DO you have a menage at home??? Ours is due to be built this Autumn but if not I'd be v interested in lessons!

Thanks guys. I do have a school but its a dinky 30 x 18 (more of a lunging ring/ somewhere to start the youngsters in- it was already here we havent built it) so not really suitable to teach others in sadly. But if we are happy here I guess I could get it extended!

However I will travel that distance so if you get stuck give me a PM and I'll come and help!

That is the one thing I really do like about HHO (as I know I complain a lot about how big it is now etc)... I've moved around a lot with work and thanks to HHO have always been able to find a new yard for the horse(s), and not felt like I was stranded in a new place. Whenever I've moved there have always been local HHOers willing to show you around and meet for a coffee.

Aww, good old HHO

Hi

I run the Wheatland Hunt website so if you pm me with your details I can run an advert for you when you are ready. I lived very close to Middleton Scriven until recently so if you want any local horsey contacts then let me know.

Regards
