Shy has colic. Panicking.

Hope he makes a speedy recovery OP. I echo one of the other posters - people only tend to post about the worse cases so what you have read is not necessarily the norm. Prepare to become poo obsessed for a few days mind!

Hope everything's ok this evening and it's a very mild case and Shy makes a speedy recovery. A friend's cob suffered recently never got to the bottom of it but think it was simply coming off 100% grass to dry hay at night but we'll never know for sure.

Fingers crossed all is ok. I have had a few dealings with colic but the most scary was when One of mine dropped to the floor with colic once whilst eating his tea, vet was there within half an hr and horse was back up on his feet by the time vet came. Frightened me to death as I thought he had dropped dead. Monitored him every few hrs through the night and he was fine. Its very scary colic as it can come from no where.

Fingers crossed for you x

From experience I'd suggest that parking your car outside his stable with the window slightly ajar & napping in that is far more comfortable (& safer) than his stable.

Hi OP,

Any news? Fingers crossed. Sounds like the vet came quickly. I know how terrifying colic is... LG had torsion colic in 2008, but he ended up going to Leahurst though so I didn't have to do night checks! I certainly would if I witnessed colic again - I think I'd probably do regular checks, although if it was the little Ginger one I'd be sleeping in the stable next door for sure. Is Shy kept at home? If not, and you want to stay at the yard but the next door stable is occupied, one idea is to park a horsebox outside the stable? My friend has done this a few times with hers (escape artist!). That way you're able to lie down properly in a camping bed/similar, protected from rain/cold but still able to look out of the window/hop out in a flash.

Keep us posted x

PS: Nearly 1,300 views in 3 hours! Shows how many on HHO are checking in to see if your boy's ok :)

Thank you SOOOO much everyone. Just back from the yard and he's bright and interested, and has nibbled on his hay. PHEW !!

I put his thermatex on - I'll worry about rugs when he's better. Just so relieved to see his head over that door wondering what was going on. Will be going back about 12/1 am.

Fingers crossed, we caught it early enough. Thank you again for the vibes. x

perhaps I can eat now..

Fantastic! Definitely hope you're sitting down to eat something now :)
Fingers crossed you find him either munching on the haynet (lost eating time to make up!) or dozing (probably unimpressed at being woken!) when you go down in a few hours x

Shy is simply never ill, so it's been a huge shock. One thing I've learned today - never take anything for granted.

Again, thank you so much for listening, and I'll report back in the morning. x

Good to see he is ok, I would keep the rug on for the time being as he has been unwell.

I would not like to see a fully clipped horse which has just had colic without a rug.
