I'm really amazed at how well his new regime has worked. The vet saw him about eight weeks ago, and told me he had to lose weight as he was bordering on obese .....so off we went onto Plan B. Fatty paddock, lots of soaked hay twice a day, and a token supper with vits and mins. Plus a dengie lite lick, and regular snacks on hooves. No work as he's turned away.

He gone from 450 to 405 kilos, and looks brilliant (14.2 hh). I'm now turning him out during the day in the main paddock with a muzzle on, to see how he gets on.Now I've got a handle on things, I'll let his weight creep up ready for winter - maybe to 420 ?

Just wanted to say it can be done, but it is bloody hard work

sm xx

haha i know the feeling, my NF was 360 last yr (14hh) and went up to nearly 400, but now it wont go!! she lives on air, bare field, no dinner and soaked hay, i swear she escapes for a midnight fiest!! well done! i know the pain it is! :)

Well done on getting Shy to shift that much weight in quite a short space of time :) Last time I weigh taped Bella she was about 320kg and standing at about 13hh ish and about 20 months old.

Any before and after pictures by any chance? *crosses fingers*

there is so much grass I think he was really gorging himself, having come from a field of poor grazing. I still cannot believe that in the fatty paddock in the morning, I take out a full barrow of poo tho .

well done thats so good ! :D:D
my boy has lost 14 kilos in about 6 weeks, not so impressive as yours but he wasnt huge to start with, ideally i would like him to lose another another 14 kilos which would take him down to 504 kilos with him standing at 16 hh i think he will look really good :D i would try and maintain his weight not put on any 15 kilos is not that much so i think he should stay at his current weight

Woop! I feel your pain, it's such hard work! I'd be over the moon with that weight loss :)

My mare came to me overweight in May, and it's been a running battle ever since. We don't have a fatty paddock at our yard, sadly, so I now spend my evenings stitching sheepskin onto various grazing muzzles to try & stop them rubbing

My plan is to get down to a good weight over winter (& she won't be rugged until this happens, mean old me) & then not to let her put it back on come spring.

I must say though, for all the hard work it is, when others on the yard are spending £££ over winter trying to keep condition on their poor-doers, I'd rather have a fatty :D

I was just worried that going into winter as a skinny mini might be a bit of a bad idea, but that's me be over protective, isn't it. You're right, I'll keep it down. I think the weight came off so quickly as he was so porky !

What is it with grazing muzzles that manufacturers haven't sussed a soft lining is needed fgs ? And I have to tie Shy's on at four startegic points to his headcollar or it's off in seconds. sm x
