Hello,

My mares recently had a bone scan and x-ray on her Sacroiliac Joint as she has been suffering with pain in the area for nearly a year but no issues have come about.
She's had Physio over the year which improves it, but she keeps reverting back even if she's done every 6 weeks. She's had the area injected, but I'm also wondering if there's anything else anyone can suggest? Would turmeric work on this kind of issue (most likely muscle related) or any other supplements to keep muscles relaxed?
Thanks :)

i had a similar issue with one of mine and it turned out to be sciatica. my lad would be fine for a while and then go back to square one. massage helped it and also rubbing in a lotion thing called 'iceberg' which was recommended by vet

Did you have her back and hocks scanned/x-rayed at the same time?

Often SI problems go hand in hand with hocks/suspensories.

Have you had her back and SI scanned, there might be something going on with the facets?

How does the pain manifest itself?

I'm surprised your Vet hasn't given you some other options.

@stencilface She was assessed at Rossdales and she wasn't lame but had slight uneven movement which the vet said was most likely due to the pain in her SI Joint.

@paddi22 do you use a Physio or massage it yourself? That lotion sounds good and soothing.. do you apply it before riding or daily?

@PorkChop she had her neck, back, pelvis and hinds scanned at the same time. Nothing else has shown up! They've done an ultrasound scan through her rectum aswell to try and find something but nothing shows up. She said it's such a difficult area to diagnose so they injected it to see if there's an improvement.

Mine was bone scanned which picked up hot spots in his SI, but ultrasound diagnosed PSD which was put down as the cause for his lameness in 2011.

Fast forward past various lamenesses to 2016 after numerous vets, physios, reiki to a slow motion video done by a trimmer (we're now barefoot) which highlighted total uneven movement behind which I think he's had for years but no one has spotted. I think I'm now on the path to sorting all his issues with the help of a classical instructor and work on his straightness.

Gawd, then you have definitely covered all bases!

Was hoping there might be something else going on as SI issues can be tricky to get comfortable.

Great that they have found nothing sinister though.

Have you thought about having someone like Rob Jackson out?

i got physio every month or so just to keep it under control, but it was manageable by doing daily massage, i did it before riding. My lad had every scan in the book and his issues would come and go every 5 weeks or so, some days he'd be fine and then the next day he wouldn't be happy cantering or going forward. Physio showed me how to feel the muscles so i could tell if he had a flare up of it.

She has an amazing Physio come out, she's literally fixed her completely before but then it just goes like over night.. it's the strangest thing and if this injection doesn't work I'm abit lost as to where to go next!

Thank you for the link! So would this not show up on the ultrasound? Sounds painful.. I might ask my Physio if she can show me how to tell and what to do in between sessions to keep her happy! My mares very easy to tell though, a quick palpation usually let's me know! Unfortunately she's a very sensitive horse too.. if she has the tiniest cut she's a nightmare to treat 😏

no, mine didn't at all. One day he'd be fine and the next he just felt miserable, and there was no pattern to it at all. He also had the injections for si and they didn't seem to fix it.

even when he had a mild flare up he was still happy to hack, but anything in a surface or turning corners would make him unhappy. A few days later he'd be fine and jumping a course of jumps happily.

You could try a TENS machine as a maintainance thing between physios? I use this on my boy who has had SI joint problems in the past. He has physio every 3 months but I use my tens as and when between...seems to help relax the muscles in the area.
