Siberian Huskies

It took us a whole year to decide on labs, we visited loads of breeders before we found the right one too. But all the research was worth it in the end :)

Why not try and take a trip to a dog show, some of the big ones will have Discover Dogs style bits, where you can talk to people that know their breeds inside out, and you can meet the dogs too rather than relying on what you read:)

How about a visit to somewhere like this? http://www.aztecevents.co.uk/proddetail.asp?prod=dogs2010#attractions

I understand that totally, it can be frustrating! But rest assured all this talking and research and thinking you are doing is going to mean you get the right dog in the end and end up being a great owner! Don't get disheartened honestly, no-one means any harm - everyone just wants to help and make sure you have a happy life with your dog!

:) Thanks Kitsune x

I know, sorry, just getting frustrated, different people telling me different things, been spending hours everyday reading about different breeds, im not even getting one yet itll be months before i get one im just looking at different breeds and came on here looking for advise and definately got some, so thank you, but i think ill just leave this for now...

When I was choosing a dog, I also came here for advise and got some wonderful information about the malamute breed - I was also left with no illusion about what I would be taking on and how much work they are and some of the advise I got was very blunt but it had to be, because people just wanted me to know what I was taking on. They weren't being mean, but at the time I kinda felt deflated because it wasnt what I wanted to hear.

Fortunately I was willing and able to make minor adjustments to my lifestyle to accommodate our Malamute - for example I would love a dog that I could take out with me when riding - I had to accept that this was never going to happen if I got a Malamute. We have put up gates, new fencing is going in, an outdoor run, he has puppy classes, agility classes, we are buying a rig for him to pull and my daughter is going to run him for fun -who knows what costly hobby thats going to lead to lol - we cant go on a night out unless its planned and he has a dog sitter because we wont leave him alone for longer than a few hours at a time - its costly and takes time and commitment - its not just a choice of dog, its a lifestyle choice.

Korben fits into our lives well and I am glad I decided to buy a Malamute as the hard work is worth to good time we have with him, but I am also incredibly grateful for the wonderful advise given here, which helped me prepare for his arrival and know what to expect. He is still only 5 months old but I know I made an informed choice before going out and buying one - pls let H&H do the same for you :)

And thats very responsible of you and why we aren't all saying dont get a dog, you are clearly putting a lot of thought and research into finding the right breed for you. So listen to what has been said about which breeds would make the best forever friend for you and don't be swayed by what you think looks best. You have to be careful about what you read and where as well, you cant beat coming on here and listening to real advice from people who actually own the breeds.

Jadey, I can understand your frustration, but people are trying to help you. As has been pointed out, CC has already said she would not recommend a GSD for you and I am afraid I agree. Apart from the fact that yet again the breed would need more training and exercise than you wish to give, to me the fact that your mother doesn't like them is a big no to me. I think I am right in thinking you are quite young, and presumably live at home, so presumably you are at school, college or working, your mum is going to have to take a share of looking after any dog so getting a breed she doesn't like is not sensible. Any dog you have will hopefully be with you for a long time, what are your plans for the future, are you likely to be leaving home, because renting a property with a big dog is not easy. Apologies if I have got your age wrong and you are already living in your own home and have no big changes in your life planned.

davisn, that sounds lovely - dull, but lovely! ;) :p :D

Some days I would kill for that kind of dependency, I won't lie, but most of the time I'm happy to be challenged. This is the husky version of obedience...

Taken half an hour ago - note the looking around to see if there's anything more interesting to do before eventually giving up and coming back, for a piece of cooked chicken, no less.

Oh, and one for MM - trough power!

My typical day with a 4mth old husky has consisted of play with teddy in the morning, giving her a raw hide chew whilst I leave her for an hour to go to the gym, small 40 min walk each day, take her to the stables where she is let off loose in a controlled area to play with the farm dogs (this usually wears her out!) and then I tie her up whilst I ride, and then back home where she spends time playing in the garden and is flat out asleep by 9.
However, I am not averse to leaving her in her crate at 8pm if I'm going out as she usually just sleeps until I get back in.
Although I truly wouldn't be without her, there are some days she makes me cry (hormonally mainly :) ) with frustration because she is in no way ever going to be an easy dog, and I do find myself still wondering whether I made the right decision especially when my mum has a lovely king charles who compared to Samu is the easiest dog in the world!!!

And I seriously did alot of research, I went to delamere forest where lots of sibe breeders get together and race their dogs, I went to a recommended breeder, I read lots, took advice wherever I could get it, so I went in truly with my eyes open.It may be nice one day if she could be let off the lead, but in no way do I expect this to ever happen, but we'll have to see if the wild beasty can be tamed!!

Dax looks to have really matured in that video BC, very impressive recall there, don't do what I have done in the past and forget about the chicken in your pocket, doesn't half smell after a few days. Glad to see she has discovered the benefit of water troughs. Not sure if I mentioned it on here but a few weeks ago Evie jumped into one of those huge circular cattle troughs, and disappeared under the water! She was quite shocked but once she had surfaced she had a little swim round before she got out again.:D

Compare that to my day.

I'm now sat down eating breakfast with a wet lab sleeping in his bed! So far we have been for our morning walk around my empty fields, playing fetch with the ball. We have fed & checked the sheep, with Dylan sat waiting at the field gate. I have bought the horses in, bringing 2 horses through the field gate whilst the 'pet' lambs were eating their breakfast in the same field, again with the dog sat by the gate waiting for me. All done off lead.

We will do chores outside during the day if the rain stops, if not we'll be in the house with the dog asleep. We'll go for a walk in the national park or down the lane this afternoon whilst practicing our training & then we have dog training tonight (which will probably be the first time he has a lead on today). Lovely.

sorry not dog related but please can I come and live with you, it sounds so idilic :)

You're telling me, I did it with hot dog sausages once, left them in a cupboard for about three days during a heatwave.

PMSL at Evie in the big trough, she's had an eventful few weeks by the sounds of it. :D Poor Daxy has to make do with that tiny trough, hence the pained expression as she tried to turn round to put her face in it!

Wish I'd taken my camera the other day when we met up with the other mad husky lady and had them all running loose in a field, Dax leapt up into a trough and then taunted the other big male sibe because he's scared of water and couldn't come and get her. :D

It does sound nice doesn't it. I love it up here. We have views of Snowdon from the yard (can even see the reflection off the cafe windows when the sun is in the right place), & views of the coast, the Menai Straights & Newborough Forest from the fields. It was beautiful sat outside cleaning tack yesterday, I got sunburnt. However, it's not quite so nice when we have horizontal rain & the wind is so strong that it rips the feed buckets out of your hand as soon as you walk out of the barn. Wouldn't swap it though.

Come join me if you like, but don't tell everyone, part of the appeal is that it's off the beaten track!

Blackcob, Impressive recall for a husky - well done, you must be pleased.

Dylan hasn't done troughs yet, but has been ditch diving since he was 10 weeks old & loves nothing better that to flop down in our drinking water ditch when he is hot or tired, usually just before we are due to go in the house.

Don't get me wrong, Dylan isn't perfect & we still have work to do, but he gets better every week. The main point is, he wants to be with me & please me - that give him a huge advantage over the collie as far as I'm concerned!!

We were up on Snowdon on Friday, tis rather beautiful, very jealous that you get to live there. :)

I walked up Snowdon in June with some friends. The weather was perfect & the sky clear. I didn't take the dog though as I thought it would be too far for his young bones & too hot. Good decision as we went up the Miners Track which has quite big steps. It also meant that we could come back down on the train - phew.

He can come next time, if I can get him to the stage where he doesn't need to greet every single person in the hope of a pat or titbit.

J&L a white German Shepherd is a German Shepherd, with white fur.
Like German Shepherds with black and gold fur, black fur, bi-colour fur, sable (red, grey, black, gold) fur, liver fur, blue fur. They are all the same breed.

White, along with liver and blue, is a bit of a genetic cock-up but some people breed them on purpose (and they have evolved into the Berger Blanc Suisse in Europe, but not here), I don't personally agree with that but I shall not go off topic.
I've met nice ones, I've met nervous ones, I've met sharp ones.

And here's the problem with Googling and 'reading', as opposed to going to a rescue, going to a breed club, going to a training club and actually meeting REAL dogs - statements like this:
"Because of this sweeter temperament, White German Shepherds are almost never used in protection dog sports such as Schutzhund"
Schutzhund does not require aggression, Schutzhund is THE breed selection tool/sport for the German Shepherd Dog and requires brains, obedience, drive, agility, endurance and above all CONFIDENCE - now, personally speaking, I would ask myself, what is the real reason that white German Shepherds are 'almost never' used in a sport where brains, obedience, drive, agility, endurance are needed, but that's another story.
I will concede that there are videos of white GSDs working on the continent and in America.
Some of the 'sweetest' tempered GSDs I meet are competing in Schutzhund.

You seem to want a big, athletic dog with pointy ears and a plush coat. But sorry, I would not recommend a GSD to you, unless it is an older one who wants a bit of a quieter life.

I wish you well in your search.

10 months. Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? (looks at you suspiciously :D)

He would probably be ok to try a short little run with madam at Aviemore see what he thinks of it :)

Off to reply to your PM now :D

My usual day with 2 sibes and a malamute consists of getting up at 5am and driving with OH to our training ground for dogs to have a run in harness if its cool enough, if its too warm or summertime they will go out for a good hour/hour and a halfs walk at that time, if im on a early i`ll stay up and get ready for work if im on a late i`ll get back to bed for a couple of hours
At lunchtime OH will take them out for 30-60 mins together when I get home from work they have a hour each seperately come rain hail or shine.
I look at my friends in their immaculate houses, with immaculate cars and clothes and do I for one minute regret my choice of breed hell no I want to be anywhere my dogs are and if that means standing in a freezing cold forest in the pouring rain you`ll never once here me complain

I have a Utonagan/Inuit.

He has the size and vocal range of the Malamute.
The family bond and mischief of the Husky.
The loyalty and obedience of the German Shepherd.

He makes us laugh every day.

He doesn't get the amount of walks described on here. I work full time and have a family and two horses. But he gets a run on the beach every day and he seems happy enough with that.

My husband is dog phobic and they ADORE each other.

To have a dog like this you need a sense of humour, a generous attitude towards your belongings and a good knowledge of pack psychology.

He has a good recall because he knows I WILL leave him behind. I follow no dog or man - they follow ME!

I have a few vids of him on my You Tube channel - cos he's so ace!
