:( Sick cats...please help.

Hi all,
My two cats are very sick and the vets cannot find the reason.
They both won't eat...although they are desperately hungry...they sniff the food but won't touch it. Have tried cat food, fish, meat etc. and have to syringe special fish goo from the vet down their throats.
They both have difficulty peeing...they are sleeping loads...and are generally very poorly. This happened on Friday, vet has done bloods and nothing has shown up, wbc normal.
They have been to the vet 3 times this weekend and I am so worried. They have both had anti bios as a precaution. The cats are a Bengal 9 and a Burmese 6.
Any advice greatfully received.

Out of interest, what sort of fish have you tried them with? I have heard of cases of cats losing their sense of smell and therefore going off food (even when they're hungry); have you tried some sort of really smelly fish like tinned sardines or similar?

Anyway, it's just a thought (although it may well be one you've already considered).

Thanks for your reply, yep have tried all the tinned fish, and cooked some trout tonight for tea and gave them soem of that....arrgggh.

Do they go outside? If so could they have eaten/drunk something toxic?
Outdoors they may meet antifreeze or other seemingly innocuous stuff that can be very bad for cats.
Indoors,domestic cleaning products can be harmful,especially perfumed ones, as can air fresheners.So if you have air fresheners remove them immediately. If you have used a new cleaning product on carpets,floors surfaces,rinse as much as you can away. House plants and cut flowers (especially lillies) are toxic to cats,so remove any house plants and cut flowers.Oriental cats are particularly curious and will investigate anything!
I am sure if the vet was really worried,he would have had them in and on drips. So the fact they are at home with you sounds positive.Keep up the syringe feeding and if necessary carefully syringe water to keep fluid levels up and help flush out whatever has caused this.

One thing that has worked for me in such times has been prawns,especially if you kind of flick them in front of the cat to stimulate the hunting instinct.
Freshly cooked rabbit is good,as is chicken,but my cats will only eat organic chicken:rolleyes:

We can only think they have picked something up but with the wbc count ok...it is difficult to know what.
Thanks for all your suggestions.....and for your encouraging comments about being at home with me....I hadn't really thought of it like that.

Have some frozen prawns so will cook them and try.

Has your vet checked them for cystitis/kidney issues? One of ours got like this and it turned out he had a partially blocked urinary tract...had to to have surgery to clear it and has been on a special diet ever since to avoid a recurrence. But made an excellent recovery.

Also, are their teeth in order?
I hope they are sorted soon, good luck.

PS - Try tempting them with liver, we have one who would do anything for chicken livers!
 
Just a thought but if they're hungry & won't eat could they have had something that's burnt the inside of their mouths? Something uncomfortable enough to put them off eating could easily be missed by a vet. In which case something like kitten milk or ice cream might tempt them more.

Bladders were full and vet emptied them.....but could find no sign of infection....and teeth ok.

Thanks for this little legs....
They seem to have lost thier sense of smell....and I know cats won't eat anything they can't smell....
Syringed water down last night....and off to the vets again today.

WBC won't tell you if they have been poisoned. Was the vet looking for FIP?
If they go out the likely cause is antifreeze - if the weather has suddenly turned cold someone could have topped up the car and spilt some.
There is always the possibility of malicious poisoning to consider.
 
Hi everyone,
Great news...the Bengal has started eating...hooray!
Re the poisoning thing...Mr Vet thought a possibility....but no real poisoning symptoms to go on....so treating for such was always going to be difficult.
Inexplicably..the Bengals' sense of smell just came back in an instant...tested with a satsuma which she hates....and then she started eating....and drank loads even though I had been syringing. Mr Vet said the loss of sense of smell was key.....but he has no explanation as to what caused it.....they have not even had snotty noses or coughs...
The Burmese showed the symptoms of the illness after the Bengal, so hopefully she will start eating soon too.
Syringing the water has helped enormously...but odly...their gum and eyelid colour didn't change...
The cats didn't vomit either...so we really are no further forward and may never know...
but hopefully both will soon be back to normal.
