My horse had his saddle checked and I was told that he need a particular new saddle. As it happened I had a spare one of this particular make. The saddler said that she would need to re flock it to fit this particular horse. Fine. Bill £350.00. If you were cynical you may think that thia was the lost commision on the sale of a new saddle?

mm, maybe but maybe not. Just one of those irritating things that we have to trust the professionals on.
Is your saddler recommended? Maybe look for someone else in the future? I know my saddler will not rip me off, in fact she has done more than need be in the past to help me out.

Did you not ask how much this service would cost before having it done?

Just a little extreme!! I only paid £300 for my saddle to go to Albion for a new tree and flocking!!

That seems a bit steep - Cliff Barnsby have quoted me £198 for a new tree and re-flock. I just have to pay the P&P.

Go back to her and query the price - re-flocking should be well under £100 even with travel added.

Thanks everyone I will challenge the bill. But this is not the first time that something like this has happened, It just seems to happen so much with horses

People seem to think that because we have horses we are minted but its actually not the case, usually the complete opposite, we are skint!!!! :D

Good luck with challanging the bill. If she has done more then what she has said I still probibily wouldn't pay it because you didn't ask for it to be done!!!!!

Also ask her if she flocked your saddle with gold plaited flocking and fairy dust :o

D :D

She must have written bill incorrectly - it must be £35. If it is £350 tell her to take the stuff back out again and flock off :)

I paid £45 for mine to be reflocked last year. This has got to be incorrect!! I would certainly be asking this lady to give you a breakdown of charges.

That seems INCREDIBLY expensive. I recently had a saddler out and she said my current saddle was a bad fit and said she could either totally re-flock the underside to fit my mare (which was quoted between £70-80) or she would recommend i buy a new Throrowgood fully adjustable saddle. Well i know she is expensive to re-flock at that price and i just cut my losses and got a nearly new T6 for £255 on ebay.... i woudl cerainly query that as you coudl buy a new saddle. Always ask how much before committing to any service as very easy to be ripped off these days.

I don't have anything useful to say on this thread, but 'flock off' made me chuckle:D

It made me chuckle too

Please, please query the bill...that charge cannot be right!

Classic, love it!

I have had bad experiences with saddlers. Some seam to tell you your saddle does not fit so they can make a sale. NOT ALL though. I disagreed but not being a saddler I got a second then third opinion and was told saddle was a good fit by both! It is still a good fit. You learn who you can trust.

That is excessive to say the least!
I very rarely go out not as I am mostly working in my workshop making new items but if I get my arm twisted by old customers I will charge :

Flock up (performed on site &
Fitted to horse & rider).................30.00
Call out (upto 10 miles).................10.00

Maximum people pay me to fit and flock their saddle is £40 I also book the customer back in for a further visit and top up(no charge), usually 2 weeks after the first flock up, this is because the flock will invariably settle with use and you usually can get another load in. This has the effect of keeping the saddle in the correct postion off the horse for a lot longer, I hear of alot of people who have had just a load of flock added and then within a short space of time it is flat again, by doing it in 2 stages you also reduce the risk of this and of getting plumps in the flocking.
So, I think your £350 bill is rather over the top don't you?
Oz :)

Let us know how you get on, good luck, Oz :)
In last post it should read LUMPS not plumps, sorry useless at typing and the edit button has disappeared! :)

My reflocking that I had done last week was free!
