Sorry. I have been an avid reader of this forum for some time but have never felt the need to post something, untill today!! I have had a horse for sale for six weeks. He isn't a supermodel nor do I claim him to be. I have very specifically on the advert expressed that he needs flat work doing with him and also if anyone calls about him I explain that he needs to muscle up again over his back as he had a few months off after he finished racing and lost some muscle. He has been in training for nine years, never lame and is honest as the day is long.
I have had about five or six people come to see him, a few bringing their "experts" along and as soon as they see him all they do is slag him off. He owes nobody anything, won enough in his racing career to pay his way and is advertised as he is. What do people expect for the little money I'm asking for him? Also have had some young girl come to see him who couldn't ride a gate on a windy day, wanted to jump him, picked her stick up and wallop him five strides away from the fence and fell off when he took off from where she asked him and then I had her mother telling me he's dangerous!!!!!
I am sick to death with people who A: think they know it all and B: want tack, rugs, gold shoes, and an oakley included in the price! People need to be realistic!
The people who came yesterday were the final straw, as I have a bit of an Irish accent they stood outside in MY yard and when I was getting the tack I could hear them slagging me off and "saying top o the mornin to ya", then giggling loudly. I nearly told them to get the eff off my yard but bit my lip.
I am just so fed up with these people coming and wasting my time, I don't understand what they are looking for.... maybe something which looks pretty but is a lunatic. Thats the impression I get anyway.
Sorry for having a rant but really needed it off my chest, the people yesterday nearly made me cry!!!
P.S I am not advertising my horse in any way on here as I have decided to keep him, put some work in to him and keep him as a fun horse for myself. He deservs a good home and I know damn well he has that with me and not someone who wants a horse to say they have one!

What a nightmare. From the posts I've seen on here many a time over it seems your not the only one that has these problems.

As for the people being rude I would've said something back! How rude!

I don't understand what is the matter with people these days they are so rude! Horsey or not!

I do feel for you OP. I've never sold a horse and I think your experiences are part of the reason why! I would rather be very, very cautious with buying than take a risk with the idea of selling later. And as an Irish person living in the UK, those people who took the piss out of your accent would have booted off if it was my yard! Your boy sounds lovely, I hope you have many years of fun with them and never regret the decision to keep him.

I agree, take a deep breath and have some wine :D
some people are just rude and ignorant.

Btw, your horse sounds lovely. If i was looking i would certainly come and see him.

Im glad you are keeping him, he'll have a good life with you and enjoy his retirement from racing :)

I think its fair to say both selling and buying are both subject to the timewasternumptygodsgiftnonowtnoitalls.
I do feel for you. Haven't had to sell recently but have been the buyer when looking for second horse for wife / daughter share.
Went to look at a TB, owner admits it hasn't been worked for a fortnight. We ask to see it ridden only to be told they didn't have a rider to demo it. Perhaps mentioning that would of been useful at time of arranging viewing.
Last one looked at OH/Daughter went on their own then rang me up saying they liked it and would I come over to view. 1.5 hour journey later I arrive, look horse over etc. Owner is telling me how if she doesn't sell then she will start jumping 1.10 tracks. Watch horse jump a couple of fences then I stick up an oxer that was all of 75cm high and 95cm wide. Owner then asks if I could make it narrower as she's not confident jumping that width. I think my face said it all.

Oh yes I'll save that one too - so apt for so many know it alls.

Sorry you have had such a lot of time wasters.

It would seem from people posting on here, that there is a greater share of numpties if you are pricing your horse competitively! Anyone who has sold a horse has been on the receiving end of it like you have although I have not had that many bad experiences buying. My best was selling a very flashy horse for low level dressage (prob wouldn't go past Adv.medium). He had a number of issues which I was honest about, but moved really nicely. I wanted to find someone who wanted a pretty good dressage horse and priced him to compensate for his various gittish bits of behaviour. First person sounded brilliant, turned up and THEN it transpired this would be her first horse ... after being in a riding school. Not a chance, he would have had her for breakfast.

anyway, glad you have come to a decision.. oh and as for the incredible rudeness... you can just take pride from the fact that you were clearly SO much better brought up than they were... (works every time for me)!

Thanks everyone, I do feel a bit better for getting it all off my chest and in writing! I don't really do show jumping anymore after moving into the racing world a long time ago but I think me and my "dangerous" horse can go and have lots of fun together, he has a new found love of jumping coloured poles and who knows maybe I couldn't sell him for a reason ;)!

As for the girl who couldn't ride a gate on a windy day quote there are plenty more where that one came from!!

Also I will say, I agree there are many bad sellers as well as bad buyers but I am just peeved off when I have been so honest about him to everyone who expressed interest in him and expect Milton to be standing in front of them!!!
I even let people take him for a hack on his own and then drive down the road behind him tooting the horn to show how bomp proof he is and still they must find fault about everything wanting me to give him away for free!!!

What morons, how annoying.

Where have you got him advertised, if he's not fit and ready to go and the price reflects this how about trying project horses?

What more can people expect if they find him on there!

I think you have made the right decision for the horse. Good luck with him. As for the rudeness, what goes around comes around. People like that meet their match one day. Put your energies into the horse and he will reward you twentyfold.

Thank you so much for posting this, it made me laugh, top of the mornin how are ye!!!. You have decided you are sick of showing your horse to numpties, and I have decided that I am sick of looking for a horse for the moment until I find something I am interested in. Your horse will be better off with you.

As for the person who said about a girl from a riding school who came to view her horse, we all have to start somewhere, we all don't have rich daddies and trust fund budgets. And some of the trickiest horses I have encountered have come from riding schools, go figure......!!!!.:)

Well....this post gave me the giggle I needed on a Monday afternoon! We get our fair share of timewasters, joy riders, day trippers, you name it we get them! You just have to shrug it off and have a giggle about it but it can get annoying as its the poor horse that's having to put up with them on their backs! Think we have to face the facts they're always going to be around to waste our time and annoy us! Lol good luck with him by the way :)

It sounds as though the horse has found a good home! Enjoy him!
I think you are right about people wanting a lunatic which looks pretty, usually for a teenager. It absolutely amazes me how many unhorsey parents are desperate to put their offspring at risk. I often wonder if the same parents would be just as happy to give their teenagers a high-powered motor-bike, and why they can't see the similarities.

You know, I do think so many people now buying horses only ever ride in a school under supervision on really quiet horses. They just do not know what to do if they ever step away from that stereotype. You know that the first question you will be asked when you advertise a horse is (in slightly tremulous tone) "is he quiet"? Next will come "is he a good jumper?" swiftly followed by "not that I jump any more but my daughter might want to". I'm afraid by the time you've had him for a few months and turned him into a nappy confused horse, it would take a lot more than your daughter to resume his jumping career.

Puts me off selling horses. You just know if you did sell, they'd be on the phone 2 months later to complain the horse no longer hacks.

I take it since you're not advertising a competition schoolmaster type, you haven't been inundated with pony club mothers looking for loans with view to buy at some indeterminate stage at least 6 months in the future then?
