I don't know about you folks but sometimes when you want to find something on the internet you can end up looking at something completely different and that' s what happened to me today. I started to look for video clips on you tube of my mares sire but ended up looking at rodeo and saw the most sickening clip I have ever seen. Briefly the clip showed a group of cowboys with a group of young horses and they were torturing thease horses in an effort to ride them. One poor horse managed to get free but somehow ended up breaking two of it's legs. The cowboys dragged this poor horse out of the arena eventually and when it fell in the walkway, they beat it untill it go up again. They then left it in a stall. God only knows what happened to it after that.

The image of that poor horse is stuck in my head. The ba*%*^ds that did that are nothing more than thugs. That's putting it politely. I know that there is alot of animal cruelty that goes on all over the world but when you see it so graphically it really really hits home.

I will never support or go to a rodeo ever..........................

It is very sad that this sort of thing happens but please remember there are Rodeos out there that do respect their animals.

I love going to rodeos

. They are fun and are not cruel, but you have to be careful which ones you go to. I only go to the Pro rodeos and these are very well run and managed and are not comparable to the backstreet ones you often see takes of on youtube.

I have to agree with Tia and PF, I enjoy rodeos.

Like Tia, I go to Pro Rodeos and I have never seen anything even bordering on the sort of behaviour you have described. I am relieved that I couldn't see a link to that clip, I hope you flagged it as abuse.

The falacy that broncs are undernourished and ill treated are completely unfounded from my personal experience, these guys look really hard done by don't they?

I have a feeling that Tia may have put up photos in the past of one of these horses at 'work' sometime in the past.

Having just been to a rodeo today (on holiday in Colorado) I saw nothing but impressive displays of horsemanship. Different to ours but still impressive.

Don't tar all rodeos with the same brush. If someone was caught beating a horse to try and get it to jump would you immediatly demand showjumping was banned?

I saw a really interesting program on producing rodeo horses (rough stock) a few years ago. The professional quality bucking horses are usually bred for the job, although stock suppliers will take a talented individual - usually a horse with a real talent rather than just a screwed up riding horse. The really neat part were the auctions. They looked like European warmblood auctions, with the horses turned loose in a pen to be bid on and some serious prices on offer.

I'm sure crappy rodeos use unhappy stock and allow ill treatment but that is certainly not the norm, nor is it accepted by the agencies that oversee rodeo animal welfare. Just like any other part of horses there is good and bad and unfortunately you can't police everyone all the time.

It's not really my thing (although I do like bucking bulls) but I've seen some great horsemanship and skill from western riders, just as I've seen bad. Same as for any other discipline.
