I am in between that one!!! I would pull a sickie if my horse was sick (compassionate leave for a family member?!
) but not just to go riding. If I wanted to compete, I would take an annual leave day off.
However, today I have made a doctors appointment for 3.20, and have a lesson this evening. Won't be coming back to work after the doctors (little point as is my last day anyway - yay!!!) So will most likely go and get my horse ready early, so that he is properly clean for the occasion.
Yes - My my last horse arrived boats really delayed etc, eventually turned up a few days late after a rough crossing. I gave her one day to settle with my other horse and then I was ment to be working on the Saturday (I wasn't that well but could of worked) called in sick and took her for a hack!
Wouldn't do to compete though purely as where I use to work go really nasty just about me looking after them when I was sick (who else is going to I ask??) let alone if I was seen out and about.
What about if you where desperate to go somewhere and your boss said no to holiday leave??? I have done the doctors visit then not gone back for the last 30 mins and bee lined for the yard instead---- im not on a sickie today to be with my horse, it is a genuine sick day and as you can tell im at home on the computer rather than galloping around ( shame if i thought my body would get me to the yard i would!)
Yep... have done it when its nice weather and going for a ride seemed like a much better idea than sitting behind a desk for 8 hours bored out of my mind. Which, incidentally, is where I am now and really wish I was out riding!
All the best comps are week days! i hate it when you ask for a day of on holiday then they so no and you cant do a sickie then cause its so obvious! I do feel guilty then and end up doing hours and hours of unpaid over time!!! I have only had a day or so of for shows in the last 4 yrs! Just sat here today wishing that i was well enough to go out, feels like a wasted day of!
Would not ring in sick to spend time with the animals. If a vet visit is happening then I will take AL or take time off in lieu, as I am usually owed some time.
Incidently i have never pulled a sicky to go riding but then i wouldnt need to as i work evenings anyway.
However, i wouldnt put somebody down or declare they have no principles just because they did.
Well technically it is theft, or fraud. If you get paid for time off sick and you claim to be sick when you're not, then you are getting money that you are not entiteled to.

OK, so if I had qualified for something (which is not likely
) and they wouldn't let me have the time off, then yes I would prob take a sick day, but as you said - its then obvious that you've pulled a sickie! However, I would prob make up all the time anyway in unpaid overtime, as I have such naturally high levels of guilt!
What would you all say if i phoned in sick because i wanted to go out for the day with my kids??
Or the other one which people hate, i left work early because my kids were sick and left you to cover me?
I've never phoned in sick because I wanted to spend time with the horse, but I have spent time with the horse after calling in sick. I find that getting out in the fresh air usually makes me feel better and I have to do the horses anyway - they are on DIY.
I work funny hours and have most of the day to ride anyway. I can also change my work days easily so if i want lessons or to compete mid week its not a problem
I have an inability to pull sickies unless I am ill - I can't cope with any kind of guilt, very stupid I know!! Although saying that, I was off for a few days with flu and took the opportunity to go for a nice hack out - medicial fresh air of course!!
I try and fit everything around work because at the end of the day I need to pay the bills and the work list only gets longer, however I have thrown a sickie when I discovered that I needed an emergency vet visit.
Maybe you think I am harsh but I have worked in a busy office where throwing a sickie means everyone else has to pick that persons work up. Plus look at it from an employers point of view!
So you go down to the Doctors with a boil on your bum and you cant see the doctor as its sunny and he as pulled a sicky to ride his horse!!
Not thrown a sickie to specifically ride, but have been off sick and then perhaps felt a bit better later in the day and squeezed in a bit of a ride...fresh air and all that!
I normally would take an a/l day, work generally pretty good about this, and I usually arrange for vets to visit in my lunch hour ( which i can stretch to 2 hours in need be then finish later)
However this afternoon I shall be sneaking away from a v boring meeting early and will prob go for a ride then!

Im my line of work i simply cannot be sick, that beats taking up anyone elses work i assure you- however, i wouldnt make out that people who do it have no principles- it is there choice.
(although granted, i havent done it and couldnt do it anyway)
-then your stuck with a boil on your bum then arent you!
See i work in a customer facing job where if i have a heavy head cold, s&d or any thing else that can spread i get winged at by customers if i go in like that so in my case if i feel well enough but am told i am not then i may as well ride my horse!
No I would always take leave though if I was entered for a competition and was refused leave for no good reason then I might consider it as a work place which will not let an employer have a day of annual leave when they need it is not very understanding after all they would have to cope if you were really sick.
Not allowing people days off when they need them encourages people to call in sick instead. I manage staff and if they wanted a day off at last minute I would have no problem if they was nothing really urgent at work. They can always catch up the next day.
I dont think it is very honest calling in sick when you could take a days annual leave to do something. After all most of us if we did not have our jobs would not be able to afford to keep a horse to ride on those nice summer days or take to competitions so we do owe our employers something.
When either of mine have been really ill, I've rung in and told my boss and she's let me have the time off as she would do the same for people with children.
My boss wouldnt let me have a day of the day i brought my house!! was a nightmare as my partner was trying to do it on his own , so you could say they arent the most understanding!
No. I'm a teacher so I can't take time off whatever the reason. It's something that you accept when you take the job. Unless you are seriously ill you have to go in because its not fair on the children. I am actually off sick today but I'm not going to ride because its essential that I get well as soon as possible
Im off today i need to ride as havent had chance been so busy with work but dont know when ill be able to ride again, first a sickness bug which has now left me with a trapped nerve in my back from endless hours retching!
nope, never done it.. i am of the breed that will only take a day off sick if i can't get out of bed.! if i am well enough to do the horse and dog, i am well enough to sit at a desk..
if i want to compete during the week then i book the day off before i enter, in the unlikely scenario that i can't have the day off then i don't enter.! its pretty obvious if you try and book the day off, can't get that day off and then pull a sickie anyway.!
if there is an emergency vet situation, i would just tell work this and then make the time up later (if required)..
