My new boy had his on Monday and is now snotty - its not yellow or green but is opaque. Is this normal? His appetite is fine. There is no record of him being vaccinated before on his passport.

hmmm a friend of mines horse had hers wednesday and it came up as a an egg shaped lump which hadnt happened before, luckily its gone down again. maybe just call your vet and ask over the phone? theyll be very honest and reassuring, let us know and good luck,

That happened to one of mine last week, never ever reacted before

If it is his first vaccination he is very likely to get a mild case of flu. Especially if he is an older horse and in work.
Ideally the younger they start, the less reaction they have. With the first 2 vaccinations it is a good idea for them to be out of work completely, however old/young they are.

He has only just turned 5 and is recovering from a 'virus' that he had at the dealers - this had cleared up and he passed 5* vetting on Monday. Due to this last illness he lost a lot of weight and is very thin. He has been turned out today and for the past couple of days has been lunged/ridden for about 15/20 minutes only.

Mine went very 'off' for about a week after her jab (first). She wasn't herself, was grumpy and quiet (more) and wanted to be left alone. No clinical signs of anything wrong though. Gave her a week off and she was fine, although after her second jab she came up in a lump on her neck (which is still there). I'd agree with giving him a while off, especially if he's had a virus recently as well.

One of my mares reacts everytime she is vaccinated, she gets swollen armpits, my vet has tried all the different vaccines on her boosters and she always comes up the same, now he jabs her in the bum and she has a few days bute and **touch wood** she has been fine.
My gelding reacted once as well, I'd had him about 5 years and had always kept his jabs up to date and he had his booster and his chest swelled up and he had the biggest abcess ive ever seen, he was on finadine for a couple of weeks and when the abcess burst he went mad and the vet had to come and sedate him and cut it out, it was awful, he was left with a hole in his chest you could fit and open hand into, I had to flush it several times aday and it stunk! The vet bill was quite large but the vaccine manufacturer footed the bill because it was classed as a 'true' reaction to the jab, my vet sorted it all out with them and all I had to do was look after my horse, he is left with a small scar on his chest. My old vet used to jab in the brisket for this reason because if they do get an abcess its a better place to drain on the chest, he too also now has his jab in his bum because he's had such a violent reaction the vet says its an even better place....

HorseGroupie - your experience with your gelding sounds terrifying!!
He seems ok in himself but will keep an eye on the colour of the snot over the weekend and give the vet a call if necessary. I am trying not to worry too much and become a totally neurotic new mummy! Thanks for all the advise x

My boy gets stiff in his muscles and grumpy for a few days so I just leave him for a min of 3 days and he is fine then.
