I was research the drug Fluphenzaine used in the treatment of acute bi polar and schizophrenia and came across this youtube link. I didnt realise the drug was used to calm uptight horses! Reading the description, this horse was overdosed over double the amount by an american vet by accident, and suffered siezures as a result. The head pressing is apparently due to a build up of pressure in the brain. Sorry if this upsets anyone, but i found this interesting and educational.

Apparently it is used a lot in the US to calm competition horses and stop them exhibiting vices.....its horrendous in humans let along horses!

I've seen it before sadly. I have a real dislike of using so many drugs and so commonly to calm horses and especially these very powerful ones which can also cause long term neurological effects in humans. Tardive dyskinesia is an often permanent horrid side effect in humans. There drugs can also cause the opposite effect in some humans ie. agitation.
The long acting ones are imo especially dangerous as once injected they are released slowly in the system for up to a month. There is no getting them out if there are problems... :(

The cynical side of me wonders if they are being suggested for horses as the human market has dropped considerably for versions of modecate and it's relatives with newer drugs and knowledge of their effects.

That was my thought aswell amandap, especially as the side effects are really starting to come to light in the human field of use. Its now a process of weighing up the good with the bad, long term there are some severe consequences (in humans) to using drugs such as Fluphenzaine, whereas there are more modern and potentially safer drugs to use, especially when combined with other treatment methods.
