Now for some reason i always thought you used side reins for lunging with. I saw a woman riding with them on the other day, didnt say anything but thought i'd ask the question on here... Can you ride whilst horse has them on? Personally i would think it would be unsafe.

You can, and I think in the right hands they can be quite useful. Remember grass reins when you were young? I never had them but a lot of kids did! Same thing!

Personally I wouldn't ride in them for fear that I'd get tangled up in them if I was coming off. However, that's a personal issue - it's something that worries me, and for the same reason I don't wear dubarrys or wellies to ride.

Ok thanks SadKen. Dont think i'd be trying it, sods law i'd get my foot caught or something. Actually thinking about it i dont use them anyway. DDUUUrrrh i'm such a twit!:p:p

Sidereins are sometimes used by instructors in lessons for less experienced riders who are not capable of keeping the horse on the bit, I have seen them used quite a bit on the continent. Should not be used very often, and I wouldn't use them that way myself. Don't see how you'd be any more likely to get tangled up in them than in ordinary reins, and if you're expecting to fall off then I'd imagine that keeping a horse on the bit would be the least of your problems.

Thanks for your reply. Shame about your last little comment though. At no part in my previous posts did i mention about falling off. Did you manage to sound ruder whilst living on the continent too or is that just natural i wonder.

Gosh, I thought Cortez' post was quite reasonable.

Think I'll toddle off and find another thread in case of causing offence unintentionally.

I remember riding greedy ponies which were fitted with grass reins! However, they were fitted loose enough so that they only came into play if the pony yanked its head down to grab some grass. They weren't really a schooling aid.

Never seen anyone ride in side reins, and would never contemplate doing it myself. Poor horse if it tripped, and anyhow it would be far too inflexible a contact. I use them lunging all the time, but I'm pretty OCD about adjusting the length and also clipping them off and on according to what the horse is doing, and I never use them in walk unless I'm working on transitions and its just a very few walk strides. Seems like a lazy short cut imho.
