side reins ?

ive recently been told that my horse being heavy handed is also a result of me being heavy handed, and i was riding the other night and got a friend to watch, and she suggested side reins for the time being, but not so tight that it HOLDS her head in, so she feels the contact but isnt forced, so yesterday i went out and bought some, and took her out on a hack and did some cantering, and i feel like they will help me for the time being as im not hanging onto her mouth, just checking when needed.

what are your thoughts?

I personally only ever lunge with side reins. I definately wouldn't hack with them as if your horse trips, it can't then stretch its neck to save itself from falling.
 
Echo the above, id never ever ride in side reins as if something happens, you have no way of releasing that tie on the horses head.

While i despise draw reins with a passion, at least the rider can let go if need be.. with side reins, you're kinda f*cked.

Too dangerous imo

Incidently, side reins are notorious for making horses lean on the bit

If I had to use side reins I would only lunge in them, sorry, too dangerous.
I would have personally spent the money on a lesson instead.

I would never hack out in side reins, and realy don't know of anyone who does, working in an outline should never be forced and it does take time.
 
I don't think side reins are meant for riding in - lunging is the correct use for them.

Sounds like a bunch of lessons may help you out and find a suitable solution? You might even benefit from lessons on the lunge to allow you to ride without using reins?
 
Even in a field or a school, something quite catastrophic can happen that can make a horse spook or bolt. Having its head tied in, however loose you might feel they are can be disasterous and both you and the horse, could end up in a heap on the floor - possibly with you underneath.

I wouldnt even school in them, let alone wander out anywhere.
 
Based on a previous post you made about schooling problems - I think you would have been better off putting the money towards a lesson.

Don't hack out in side reins - it's really not a great idea..........
 
i attually dont see the large amount of a difference in riding in them and lunging in them? side reins work a treat on my horse. Every rider for them selves and that lol
