Am i right in thinking that a leather 3 fold girth is correct? I have been using a webbing one but am going to the nationals and need to get a leather one.
Am also having trouble finding one if anyone has any susgestions?

3 fold one correct yes, no idea where you can get one these days though. Have you tried asking a good saddler to make one?

thank you, Yea have had a look, couldnt see anything, my instructor has got some second hand ones i will have a look at those - such a nightmare finding all the correct stuff

Be careful with three fold leather girths - they can be very hard and cause girth galls. I deally a three fold girth should have a piece of blanket stitched into its middle - you literally open the fold and pour neatsfoot oil onto the blanket twice a year or so and this lubricates the leather and keeps it soft. On a girth that has been neglected you might have to repeat the process a few times. Be careful about using the girth on a grey or palomino until the oil has soaked in well - the leather can stain them!
The easier alternative is to get a soft 'baghide' leather girth from Laura Dempsey - these are very nice and do not chafe the horse.

My last competition I was using an Atherstone (horse got too fat for its 3 fold and as you probably know they are like hens teeth, uless you have £££ spare!) and the judge said that it wasn't really a huge issue! (She was slightly bothered about the hairbobble between the horses front legs due to lack of leather loop!)
What classes are you doing at the Nationals?
