sidebone - how long does it take?

Hi - any one got experience of sidebone?

I have a horse who has banged his lateral cartilage (LF inside heel) and it is ossifying nicely.

How long will it take before it settles and he comes sound?

My old horse had sidebone and ringbone. Vet said the sidebone wasnt a worry as rarely caused any problems, however the ringbone advanced and she was retired due to lameness.

Sidebone can take varying lengths of time to ossify but will generally cause no issues once complete, Ringbone.. As i was a bi thung up on (DOH) will

My horse went lame from side bone last year. With remedial farriery with spiral shoes and hoof grooves, he is thankfully soundish, but sore when in the school until he has warmed up for 20 mins. He doesnt go in the school very often.

It depends on where the side bone is as to how sore your horse will be from it.
 
He's banged the lateral cartilage about 2 cms from the point of the bulb of his heel, up towards the pastern. There's a solid patch over and around the cartilage about the size of a 50p piece. He's sore around the area, including the heel bulb itself........... does that help?
 
I am not a vet, but I would imagine that as it is near the bulb of his heel, which is a soft area, this will be sore for a while.

So am I right in thinking that he got the side bone because he accidentally banged his hoof? If so, it sounds like quite a whack and he will have bruising in the area too which will take a few weeks to settle too.

The bruising will settle and it will then be more comfortable. Unfortunately, side bone will not go away, but having said that once the tissues have settled down and reached a steady state, he should be more comfortable.

Have you had x-rays taken? It might be worth talking to your farrier and vet as remedial shoeing maybe required.

X-rays showed up that my horse had a mediolateral foot imbalance and side bone. The spiral shoes treat the foot imbalance and the grooves in the side of his hoof wall, allow the hoof wall to flex and absorb concussion.
