Sidebone ideas?!

Hi All,

Has anybody heard of any successful treatment for sidebone? I know this is fairly unlikely but just a vague hope! Also how has anybody found sidebone has presented? Has the horse suddenly gone lame or was it progressive unsoundness.

Any advise would be very much welcome!

Sidebone is usually created as a result to imbalance in the foot, the horse's ligaments ossify to try to stablise the foot against the imbalance. They can also be created after a trauma, again where the foot is trying to stablise itself.

The best treatment for sidebone is excellent foot balance and limited exercise until the horse returns to soundness. Sidebone grows, then stablilises and can break down again if the foot no longer needs it for support (although it doesn't always do this). Once the sidebone is formed, usually the lameness subsides and the horse returns to full work.

Depending on how you think the sidebone occurred, perhaps the best place to start is with someone else reviewing the foot balance, perhaps with the aid of x-rays.
 
Thanks for the info, I am wondering whether it may be an idea to try her barefoot? Thinking that she may be better having the natural elasticity of her foot? What does anybody think of this idea?

My horse has sidebone and lateral foot imbalance. He was shod at the horsepital following lameness work ups and x-rays.

He had sprial shoes on and grooves made into the hoof wall under the sidebone ossification sites. He is now sound, but feels it on hard ground.

At the end of last year, he was reshod at the horsepital and put into equi-librium shoes instead, keeping the hoof wall grooves which absorb the concussion.

I would go with whatever your vet and farrier recommend. They seem to have a shoe for every problem!
 
I would talk to your farrier about a "sidebone shoe" which he should know how to do.

Should give the right support and balance to the foot. My friend whose horse factured his sidebone, uses them to great sucess.
