I’ve made the decision that my little pony has to stay in, as per my mites thread he’s now so bad I feel I need to keep him away from grass altogether to try and heal the sores and break the itch cycle a bit.
In itself not a problem. I have a surfaced turnout pen and he has company.

My horse and old boy have been turned out together (usually all 4 together)
They have been out for about 3 hours at least and still all hell is breaking loose. They are yelling for each other and I suspect the horses trotting past the house on the road I keep thinking I can hear is actually my horse galloping up and down on concrete ground.

Think I’m going to have to go turn them out ?‍♀️?

Have you tried Cavalon?

It is like a very thin almost plastic type film, which seals the bite or wound, but is air permeable It only comes in small spray bottles as you need very little.
My old pony was really badly bitten on his face and tail last year, I used 1%Hydrocortisone cream sparingly on the worst sores, and aloe vera gel to calm it, and then applied the spray daily. Don't wash off. It only takes about a day for it to start healing, leave until the scab drops off.

Thinking outside the box here. Diatom Earth which is used to eradicate red mite in chickens might be worth a go. It’s a natural organic product which can be rubbed into the legs/face and razors the mites to death. Worth a go and about £17 for a large tub.
Hi thanks. I have used this and it does help it was one of the few things I noticed some improvement as long as I did it daily. I asked OH about getting me some but he said it’s been banned!! I’m really not sure that’s true, not in this kind of context anyway, not sure what they used it for on the farm! He’s going to look if they have any left but otherwise I’ll buy some more

This is costing a fortune ?

Thank you! Never heard of it but just ordered one to try. ?
Hydrocortisone might be a good shout too, that’s not one I’ve tried and I’m sure we have some here somewhere already

Test a bit if using D.Earth on open sore skin, as i recall i used it on one of my furries…not sure which one now as it was yrs ago, but used my bare hands and despite washing hands after, microscopic bits had embedded in my skin and it was cracked and dry for days afterwards, feeling very sore. Its very dehydrating so great for killing bugs but the downside of using it on skin is it can create very dry sore skin.

in your case the skin is already sore made worse by the mites, so its a case of kill them off with DE to stop them creating worse sores, with attached risk of making the sores worse temporarily by using DE, but after the mites are dead the sores can actually heal.

I recall from your other thread youve got long grass boundaries - do you notice pony worst affected grazing the long lucious grass there, more than the others?
Field mites/hay chiggers will crawl on anything living and start to bite and suck on skin. It was horrid when we had bales with some, we sent it back. They swarm easily - They were all over our face and neck itching like crazy!

P.s - im not sure its wise to give in and turn them all out together- it’ll create a precedent, where they know how to create a stink to get what they want! They have a mate each, theyre fine!

It hasn’t been banned, I’ve just used it to clear my chicken run.

I do get that, I lost my last horse after be broke his leg careering round on hard ground in the field, so I’m a bit nervous after that.
This is a much loved new horse, my first sound one in years and I just cant risk him. Also and this was the deciding factor he was hounding the old boy round with him.

I’m not sure when these two became so chummy ?‍♀️

Questioned OH on the dia earth and no of course it’s not banned but they used it to clean grain of bugs but they are no longer able to use it for that reason.

@PurBee no I would say he’s the least likely to try and graze under the fencing or the lime because he’s terrified of electric.
I’d say you hit the nail on the head in that it’s underlying health perhaps. This is a reaction and the others are dealing with it better, that’s not to say that aren’t bothered and they do have the odd sores but I think where he has cushings and is old that maybe his immune system isn’t as great. A few years ago he’d have been the least reactive. Now he’s the worst ever.

Can you swap their friends around and see if they settle then?
They are now all out together and peace is restored
No I can’t though. The other 2 really dislike each other ?‍♀️ Not In a fighty way but they are not happy together at all
Load of weirdos!
To be fair no one much likes my oldie (who is in fact younger than old itchy pony!)
He’s that old man no one can make conversation with!

The cream I have and dug out contains a steroid but was prescribed for my dog when he had a itchy skin infection.

Can’t wait for my vet who knows this pony and last years issues to return from her holiday on Tuesday ?
