I read the thread earlier about the low prices that foals are making at the sales (and the unsold being abandoned), I've seen quite a few £150 foals in my area on the free-ad sites, but even so, I didn't expect to see a £100 foal adverised on H&H. :(

The whole situation is very sad, I can donate a few quid but apart from that I feel helpless. I cannot take on anymore horses as my recent addition takes me to my limit. I'm really glad that I got him as I agonised over the decision. Gah, I wish I had more land, time and money.

At least they are saving him the sale ring torment.. I don't understand why they are still breeding and popping out foals willy nilly :0(

It's not just youngstock, there are some older (but not old) horses being given away for peanuts. There is a perfectly healthy, gorgeous 15.2hh 8yo tb being advertised as free to good home locally.. No vices, good doer, stocky type tb...
I am sorely tempted as it looks like my horse will be out of work for the foreseeable future..

He looks lovely, surely someone will snap him up? I was recently offered €700 for my little irish cob filly of unknown sireage (is that even a word?!? Sorry, have had a few tonight), but turned it down as I want to keep her, seems mad that someone can offer that for her, yet this little stunner is going for £100!

I totally agree with you on both points. I hope that he finds a lovely home.

It sounds like he/she is certainly worth looking at.

The whole horse 'market' is in a very sorry state. I understand all the reasons and the situation not going to improve in the near future, I really hope that it doesn't get even worse first.

ETA. La Fabia, I agree, he is a bleddy nice foal for £100.

The situation isn't going to get any better as a lot of breeders just seem to keep putting their mares back to the stallion again each year. It seems to be the higher end breeders that have cut back and the dross carry on.............

Section A's are the worst. Colt foals are not even worth what it costs to get them chipped and passported. Sadly the world only needs so many child's ponies......

PS smart foal Faracat - he will be lovely.

Probably so cheap because he hasn't got lots of flashy white markings - lots of white seems to be really in fashion with welshies atm. Sad that it's that shallow. He'll make a lovely riding horse.

Nope, sadly I reckon it's not a typo...I live in prime Welsh D country and at the local Welsh Pony and Cob Society sales, you'll be lucky to get much more than £150 for a decent yearling, never mind a lovely little bottle-tail like this one..there are exceptions of course...but it's very much a buyer's market..have heard of many smaller-scale breeders giving up though, so hopefully the market won't be saturated with so many unwanted youngsters :(

This is one thing that gets my goat in equestrian world , is the fact that there are many top producers , or local little studs that are still breeding till this day , even when money financeally is not good and there are many foals and older horses out there that do not have a permement homes out there ,
They give all the excuses , it's where our income etc come from
I just wish for once they would find an alternative way of income
Instead of breeding foals that could possibley end up like many others
I do believe the government should put a breeding ban on
Not just on equines but many other animals that are being bred for money that end up at slaughter houses etc

P.s back to foal
He looks a stunning foal , but at that price I could only imagine it will end up in the meat mans hands
, if knowone buys it shortly
