Running from a predatory animal is not common sense.

Sadly common sense isn't common. :(

I've been told that domestic dogs have had all their hunting and killing instincts bred out of them thousands of years ago, that holding eye contact with a dog means that you are friends and that the growling dog snapping at my horse's heels is just playing. I've watched in horror, helplessly as a dog walker let their barking, straining at the lead dog off the lead in a field of horses (including my grey) and it then proceeded to chase the herd for three laps before the horses thankfully had enough and went after the dog. There was also the 'furbaby' who bit his owner on the face and shredded her lip.

I know a person who works with dogs for a living and has done loads of courses who is always being growled at, nipped/bitten etc, it's something about the energy/intensity of interactions and failure to notice that the animal is not comfortable with them. I've seen them 'walk in on' dogs I wouldn't go near.
