Signing out of food chain

Can anyone advise?

Bought a horse in may and on receiving her passport there was a post it note on the page saying please could you sign horse out of the food chain and get a vet to endorse.

I did, because regardless of anything I’d rather my horse wasn’t eaten! However, I’m puzzled as to why the old owner asked me to do this? Do we think she has a vet history that hasn’t been disclosed?

She needs to be signed out in case you need to use drugs at some point, if she had previously been treated she should have been signed out at the time, I wouldn't consider it any more than something that had been missed, most vets will insist on it for all their equine clients.
 
Ok thank you be positive. I was suspicious as she’s now lame and I wondered if she’d had her hocks injected for example. Perhaps I’m giving it too much thought

Did you ask to see her vet history when you purchased? most people don't even think about it they just ask a general has she been lame etc. and accept the answer, I think you need to find out what the issue is and hope your insurance accepts it is a new condition, you have had her a while so it should be ok just don't put the idea into their head or your vets in case it makes them think it is an older condition.
 
I did but the lady hadn’t registered her with a vets and she wasn’t vaccinated so she said. She had only owned her for 18 months - he teenage daughter had ridden/competed and outgrown her. This is what I was told and it seemed quite plausible in that she had obviously been bought to sell. She came on trial from a private home so I wasn’t overly cautious.

I’m going to get investigations done anyway (I didn’t have her vetted) and as you say hope the insurance covers it!
 
It's an easy thing to overlook and the pages quite hard to find in their passports! Maybe they noticed it wasn't signed when checking through her passport before you took her home and thought they had best mention it incase it got forgotten again.

We have a fair few horses come into the yard that haven't had their pages signed so I wouldn't worry about it just remember to get it done when the vet is next out.
