Puppy is 10 months now and coming along really well. Recently though on walks he's started lying down on the pavement looking up at me balefully, or stretched out playing dead. Eventually he gets up and then tears off like nothing happened, tail wagging away. I'm not worried about him but just wondered if there's a reason he does this? It can be on a long walk or a short walk, even two minutes out of the house, so I'm positive he isn't tired. The first time it happened I cried with laughter, he looked so funny, so I wonder if I've made him think he's done something good?!

You sure he isn't just inviting you for a play?
Do you make a big deal about it when he does it?
Have you taught him to lie down? He is maybe doing it because he thinks he might get a treat or a cuddle.

Ha ha I do wonder if I've accidentally "trained" him to do it!
But he doesn't get a reward or anything, and I even ended up dragging him along the floor, fully stretched out, as he refused to get up! But like I say maybe my laughing encouraged him?

you have a clever little doggi, there could be a few reason he/she is doing this, if you have a smaller breed should could be getting a little tired, therefor u could shorten the walks for a while and gradually build them back up.

It could be he/she realised the walk is coming to an end shortly and he/she is protesting, also in larger/lazy dogs that are not used to being exercised, or those that don't like being on leash, a medical related problem (pain) or simply for attention or a carry if they are used to being carried around.

Either way.....take some treats out with you and have them pre diced into small pieces and take a clicker, when he/she proceeds to lie down, get a treat out, waft it passed his/her nose and see if it gets his/her attention, if it gets them up onto there feet, hold the treat in your hand and allow them to take it, but try to carry on walking, and when the treat is taken from your hand click with the clicker, other than that dont make any fuss, eventaully u should beable to click to get the dog up onto it's feet then treat as the clicker is the reward assosiation.
