Just wondered how many of you have done things that to others would think not worth a mention, but you are over the moon about?

This week for the first time with Chancer.

Half of a turn on the forehand on each rein whilst mounted. We will work up to a complete 180 turn with time.

Walking and trotting over a single ground pole when ridden

and finally 3 strides of canter done very calmly!

Really nothing to get excited about, but I am as pleased as if I had won a championship.

Do others get lots of pleasure out of these tiny achievements or is this limited to someone with their first youngster?

For those who have had lots of youngsters, does the pleasure and excitement fade when you are doing this year in year out?

My proudest moment ever was with my welshie. She was awful for running out when I got her but one day at a wee indoor show, she cat lept over a spread, i had to slip my reins to the buckle. The next fence was a related distance on a dog's leg...I opened the rein in that direction and gave her a nudge- she flew straight over it. My left side was wide open for her to run out but she didn't!

I've worked with quite a few greenies and I love it but maybe if you did it as a job it wouldn't be so fun!

No the excitement never ever fades for me - I absolutely love working with youngsters and I doubt I could EVER tire of them. To me this is such an important thing in the equine world, making sure your ones become the best they can possibly be. I am proud of all of my youngsters, both past and present, and I can't imagine a time when I won't have them.

Little things are MASSIVE when you are dealing with babies/youngsters. This week I've had my fair share of massive breakthroughs, and obviously they mean nothing to anyone else, but they mean the world to me.

I love reading your updates by the way. I think you have done an absolutely fantastic job.

Oh absolutely!! My proudest moment with Till's do date was taking her on an unfamiliar hack and having a canter (our first ever canter!) along the bridlepath that the hack takes us through.

It sounds really silly but it brought the biggest smile to my face and I felt like I'd won Badminton - it was a feeling and a momnet that I'll have a job to beat!

Having recently found myself with my second 'rescue' case I can certainly relate to these small steps that make you so proud.
I had a little stallion with me for a while that was as wild as can be. He'd been very badly treated and you couldn't get anywhere near him...just to be able to feed him a handful of grass from my hand was a great feeling let alone finally getting a halter on him and leading him/grooming him etc...
I now have a little Exmoor type pony. She's approx 2 and a half and hardly handled but is very sweet natured. Today I brushed her from top to tail and picked up a back leg. Chuffed to bits I was

I also have a little shettie who came with the Exmoor. She nickered at me today for the first time and that made me feel great too

oo yes!!! My horse (first horse) was 4 when I got him, but everything we did together meant so much to me, he couldn't canter in the arena when we bought him, had only jumped cross poles and was awfully green. My proudest moment was when I first got him going on the bit in trot - I don't think I'll ever beat that

I totally know what you mean

Yup I know what you mean too. The smallest things, that other more confident and experienced riders may take for granted. I took Georgie on our first fun ride last weekend, I havent stopped smiling all week!

I have lots of proud, cheese grinning moments but the most recent was when we went to the beach a few weeks ago. I was worried that she was going to totally lose it with excitement and I would not be able to control her
blush.gif
There were 3 of us and when we went to go down the slope to the beach the other 2 horses refused to go down, Cropi just walked calmly down
grin.gif
when we had to cross a little stream to get to the beach, the others refused to go through and although Crop was a bit wary, she listened to my reasurrance and went through
grin.gif
we then had the most amazingly controlled and exciting canters and gallops
grin.gif
She was a total star. We unfortunatley fell over, arse over tit and my hand got a bit mangled, she was pratically wrapped around me walking back to the box, nuzzling me the whole time. I am just so so proud of her and I love her to bits

Oh I do too. I still get all silly when mine whicker at me.

As Amber is normally a stroppy, tantrum throwing cowbag when I dare to do anything such as put a bridle on, pick her feet out, pick bot eggs off, etc when she does behave it means so much more.

I think she has been swapped as she has let me do all those things without so much as a filthy look recently.

Great achievement!! You should feel pleased x

It's not just with youngsters too!
April is 20 odd and is quite a moody, suspicious mare.
She won't be caught by strangers or anyone she doesn't trust but now when she sees me she neighs and comes straight down, it's an amazing feeling after months and months of trying to build a bond!

I have so many now, all probably tiny to many but massive to me. I feel so silly sometimes that I get so excited about managing a walk-canter transition and him being united and working correctly.
Then there is stuff like when I was grooming today he kept trying to cuddle me, and was then licking my face - silly I know but I often worry that having a sharer would ruin our relationship.

Thanks for your comments, I now don't feel so daft texting my instructor to say 3 strides of canter and going round telling everyone I met how great Chancer is at managing to go into canter and then look so suprised that he had done so.
