Silly names for dog breeds (or just made up?)

Now I confess I’m not a great dog lover (sorry - give me cats any day!) but have to ask if cross breeds names are just made up by the owner or if they’re a real thing. Have just seen an ad for Rottador/Labrottie puppies which are obviously a cross between a rottweiler and a labrador. Made up or real?

Both of those sound ridiculous :D

OH and I call ours a sprointer (springer x pointer) when we're being knobs, as a joke. Was disappointed to put the term into Instagram and get a load of returns.

IMO all the cross names sound ludicrous, and have to have been made up at some stage, but for some reason my friend's maltipoo drives me insane. Probably because she goes around proudly calling it that.

Stupid, someone at work has a Sh!t Poo that she will happily joke about.
Also means I would have been riding a Cleve-blood as a teenager, or our family Shet-Cob.
Why do we need to differentiate between a mongrel and a cross breed?

I’ve just had to state Rew’s breeding for insurance. He’s a lurcher with known breeding, sire was a whippet, dam is (whippet x greyhound) x (whippet x Bedlington), so a mongrol which is fine by me. Bearing in mind the current dog issues I would have been happier to have been able to list his breeds, after all a mongrol can be any type of dog.

I call all of mine mongrels, one terrier has 6 breeds , other terrier 3 and lurcher has 3 … I can’t stand the stupid names either, just call them poodle cross or cocker spaniel cross

The daftest name I have heard for a dog is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever 😁 I know it is a real breed but surely someone could have picked a name than runs off the tongue better?

Hearing them bark, a better name would be a Yappy Yodelling Retriever 😔

I think lurcher and longdogs are perfectly acceptable terms for those types of crossbreeds (the terms being used as far back as 1700s). My gripe with these silly crossbreed names is the intention behind them - gives breeders an excuse to ask ridiculous amounts of money and justifies peoples purchase of their “designer” dog.
