But never had a dog that swims before!! Do you guys hose them down after they've been in the sea? My older boy only ever paddles but the pup will swim next week when we are down in the West Country, but being relatively long coated, I'm wondering if we should be rinsing/washing him every time, or just take him to the groomer when we get home (lazy way out!!)?!

The beaches I use in the main have rivers running into them so I just give him a swim in there before I put him back in the car. But if I use a different beach or I don't have time, I don't worry about it too much. He has a double coat.

That's a good idea re rivers, will have a good look at maps when selecting beaches! Mine is a water dog but Mediterranean so doesn't have a double coat, he swims a lot but hasn't done much in salt water yet, went a few times when tiny but obviously we didn't let him go too deep/be in water too long then, but now he's a bit older and bigger i'm sure he will want to spend a fair bit more time in the water!

We have a mobile home right on the beach and spend a fair bit of every summer there the labs swin several times a day .
I never rinse them but will give them a quick trip to the horse shower at home now and again . I have never had an issue in fact they look great during the swimming season they get a quick do with the furminator a couple of times a week .

Same as CC: we have a river at the entrance/exit to the beach so Betty gets a dunk in there before heading home. If we are somewhere without fresh water nearby then she gets a hose down at home to wash the salt off.

ets: she is single coated (and pretty thin at that!)

We never hose ours. Hadn't even thought of it, to be honest! We're not the dog grooming types though, they get a brush now and again, but in general don't get bathed much.
