How is a saddle measured? The previous owner of one of my horses said he is a 17 1/2 medium fit. What does the 17.5 stand for? and what does the medium fit stand for?
The 16.5", 17", 17.5" is the measurement from the stud on the saddle at the side by the wither to the middle of the cantle. This size determins the length of the saddle. this is important for both horse & rider. The rider needs a saddle that he/she can fit into. The horse needs a saddle that isn't too long for it & rubs/causes pain to his back. The width measurement has to be right so as not to pinch the horse & so the saddle spreads its weight & the weight of the rider along the muscles either side of the spine & does not put any weight on the spine whatsoever. I hope this has made things a little clearer for you.
