Hey folks, seen a lot of posts on here recently re calmers and was wondering if anyone has any theories (wild or otherwise lol) as to why horses go through mad spells!! My horse (gelding incidently) is MENTAL at the moment yet is living out 24/7 with precious little by way of hard feed.... he was quieter in the winter! Have martians invaded.......?

How bad is he? Have you checked all the usual suspects of saddle etc etc? I would be tempted to cut out all hard feed and see if that makes a difference. Mine are all out 24/7 and not being fed anything. Also is there a mare nearby who could be making him fruity by flirting with him? (Just wondered if that would account for his being changeable)

Yeah he's turned out with mares - maybe they're making him mental! He's normally out with them though and been there for a few years, its a strange one! Don't want to cut out feed entirely as the grass isnt great this year and he isnt a good doer...

To be honest, he keeps well out of the mares' way - they gelded him good and proper lol! It's driving me crazy though, i got trampled the other day

I think sometimes they genuinely have harmless mad spells

Last week mine was so sharp that she went off like a rocket on every hack and pulled all the way home, yet this week she's content to plod around on a loose rein again and was distinctly unsparkly in the school yesterday.

Sometimes it's related to the weather - have you had a breezy few days?
