Silly things that scare your horse

Glad its not just mine that has silly phobias then!

Actually he does have another one that slipped my mind. He is terrified of the horse eating one-eyed chuhuahua who lives at a nearby farm. It doesn't do anything - just terrorises him by looking at him funny

Oh yeah, markings on the road. Used to have little gypsy type pony who would be find with EVERYTHING on the road, motorway bridges not bother, empty rattling timber wagons... but the white lines on road and also the black tar lines in the road where they've done repairs.... she had to hop over them.

my daughters first pony never liked for sale signs . used to be difficult if she went out hacking up the road to get to bridle path

Half of the riding arena - she can't possibly face going ALL the way round. Daftest thing is which half swaps on a daily basis!

Also being ridden (issues!!), for the first ten minutes then she forgets to be scared???!!

Last night I snuck a hack in before it got too dark, and someone how dare they had cut a tree down in the forest .. tut tut much head turning and snorting .. I just sat there LMAO at her.

Eric is a big wuss and generally scared of his own shadow! But he's gorgeous so I can live with it

last time we did a dressage test he caught sight of his reflection in the mirror and ran away from himself!

"I remember hacking once on some lanes and coming to the end of a particularly windy lane and there were full white lines, a circle and the big word STOP in white letters. It was so comical because Ruby slamed the breaks on and stuck her head down to the ground almost as if she was reading it She went over it after; never around, always quite literally, with a huge leap over ."

Ha ha, was just about to post something very similar. Friend's daughter on a young pony, exactly the same thing, was trotting along briskly and just stopped dead, splayed feet and stuck his nose on the big "STOP". Practically hopped over it to get away, too....

George is pretty good, he isn't scared of motorbikes, huge articulated lorries, buses, combine harvesters, bikes etc. but he does get scared if something changes - he had a right paddy once because a tree had been cut down, it was all gone and tidied up but he saw a gap in the hedge and was most put out!

OK so Gem is scared of:
Donkeys
Sheep
Paper (REALLY helpful when trying to learn a dressage trst whilst riding and she tanks off!!)

and anyone blowing rasberrys! (really odd, but its quite handy to make the noise when she really isnt listening to me, gets her attention straight away!!)

really random i know!!

Snap. Perhaps we should form some sort of support group for raspberry-phobic-horse owners?

someone mentioning ponies reminded me....
Ron hates ponies - especially out hunting when they over take him, but that might be more jealousy than anythin else!

there is a NF foal up the road from us and we have to give it a very wide berth, even crossing the road to get past!

Squirrels!!!! Cause we all know they are really horse eating monsters disguised as cute, small fluffy creatures!!!

Plus all the usual - plastic bags, baby lambs.....

hmmmm.... the list would just be WAY TOO long.... so

EVERYTHING - including his own shadow .... but only when ridden. In hand I could lead him through the jaws of hell and back (so long as he got a mint for being good).

my mare is scared of puddles, bags, donkeys, pigs, sheep, a patch of grass that is a slightly different colour to the rest of the grass, men in hats....quite a lot really!

My boy is scared of other horses you see out hacking (although I suspect he is just being a tart as he flares his nostrils and prances around doing stallion impressions), a bag if you see it out hacking, yet will stick his head in it if it contains food, and one particular bollard in the middle of a bridlepath, and a wheelbarrow with flowers in it outside someones house

Shilasdair its really odd! people just have to make the quietest rasberry and she gets really unsettled?!

i did hear (or maybe dream!) that it was like swearing in horse language??

if it is then she is very PC!

Murphy isn't really scared of anything, he'd rather investigate it.

The one thing I've ever known him to scoot away from is...lager!!! My OH put some in his hand to give Murphy a taste, he sniffed at it and scampered away!

That kind of reminds me of something really embarassing!

I used to work as a groom for a local SJer and the morning routine was always muck out and then get the horses hacked out.

I had fallen in love with one of her youngsters, a stunning dark grey belgian warmblood called frosty!

We went out hacking around a local estate one day and frosty spotted a group of ladies wearing the full head scarves and long dresses, accompanied by some gents with turbans. It was quite windy and this horse absolutly went mental over this.

From that day onwards, the horse hated people who were wearing terbans, the full head dresses (i dont know their exact name

) and the like. He'd snort at them, he'd generally kick up a fuss and not let them near him.

From that point, people used to argue over who had to hack him out as although he was lovely, our local estate hacking had a very large population of muslims and he was a complete nightmare

Jack is scared of chickens, we walked past a rolled up carpet once that terrified him! - although a lorry can go past us no problem!!
