Hi everyone. I have been told by someone that my horse may need silver nitrate possibly for her joints. I have done a search on it but am a little confused. Does anyone know exactly what uses it has for horses as I know it has several different properties. I am baffled. Any help is greatly appreciated.

have only ever used silver nitrate as a caustic stick/powder for the removal of tissue on overgranulating wounds never heard of it for joints you would not use it as a joint supplement as its toxic

Ye I am a bit confused as to what you would be intending on doing with silver nitrate for joints!?!! who told you that?! if it was vet then ask them to explain! if it was a friend of a friend sort of thing, id think again.........
Cod liver oil! wohoo! (don't know!) Not a big pro on joints..... but I would steer clear of silver nitrate unless veterinarily recommended!

I had Silver Nitrate applied to a scar on my wrist to burn off the proud flesh - it hurt like mad. I wouldn't think it was a good idea to eat it.

hi i think you mean oral gallium nitrate. it has good write ups for joint problems - try googling it, its very interesting. x

Thank you everyone. it was a bit of a bizzare reason that I was asking. it is actually for a friends horse, thought it was easier if I said it was mine. It was mentioned by someone else though she had no intention of feeding it without knowing more about it. I was intrigued as only know of it's uses as an antiseptic purpose and couldn't understand it's use for joints. Thought someone else may no something I didn't. thank you for all your replies
