Has anyone tried it? If so, what is your views ? I have a 14h Welsh d gelding who suffers from sweetitch,if you have tried it do you have any recommendations on particular products?
I don't know about its efficacy with sweet itch but I tried it for a little while for non heating weight gain. I found it to be very expensive, a bit of a fiddle and frankly too high in protein which some horses react to. I came off it and went back to basics with a good high fibre feed. Some of their products good as add-ons maybe but for me not the feeding system as a whole.
I also think its over priced, but they're the only supplier I can find with low protein grass nuts, and they're also the cheapest I can find for plain old Timothy chaff, so I've recently switched to SS.
There lucie cobbs are fantastic but was hard to get so stopped feeding I know other people that use SS and think there brill but they are a bit on the pricey side hope this helps
I've tired it but went back to Allen & Page. I don't think they have anything which claims to be specific for sweet itch. It is a bit complex - although I'm sure that sorts itself out when you get into a routine. But the killer for me was the price. It isn't any better than the alternatives but it is more difficult to get hold of and more expensive.
That said there is someone on our yard completely dedicated to it and will always choose to use it for her horses. She claims that you can ride them immediately after feeding on simple systems - not sure if that is true as I'm too old fashioned to ride immediately after feeding!
I use their feeds.
Though there is nothing specific about sweet itch, it doesn't appear to be such a problem as it was, I think high levels of sugar in other feeds certainly don't help.
It appears expensive, but I find I use less.
It won't store for long periods. I like that as it has no preservatives in it. I get a delivery once a month.
No cereals means you can ride straight away.
The advice from Jane van Lennep has been spot on, I trust her.
