Simple System Feeds?

I went for The Pure Feed Company instead as i couldn't be bothered with all the soaking and measuring of all the feed that was required with Simple Systems.

So glad i did, has transformed my horse!

I've heard of it, someone who used to be on my yard feeds it. I had a quick look at it just to be nosey, just looked like alfalfa pellets/speedi beet to me, that's what I feed anyway, I get the dengie alfa pellets as no mollasses :-)

I used the greengold, topnosh and purabeet but it was difficult to get hold of and to get it delivered by supplier 15 miles away was extra on the product and extra for delivery. Ive not opted for

Just grass by d&h
Alfa pellets by dengie
Linseed by charnwood mill

Still have some purabeet but will look at unmollased beet when it runs out.

Use this for my mare.
Its brilliant.
Dont quite know why Milliondollar had to soak and weigh it all out, as I certainly dont do that.
I have a distrubution depot near me so I pick up my order from there and get an extra 5% off total price.
Its not as expensive as some branded feed.
Its totally unmollased and can be fed to laminitics.
Girls on the help line are really really helpful.

Out of interest DirtyMare, which of the simple systems feeds do you use as most of the Simple System feeds require soaking as they expand and they actually recommend that you soak all their cubes. They do offer some feeds that can, at your own choice, be fed unsoaked but as one of their main marketing angles is that a horses diet is 70% water most of their feeds require you to add water before feeding.

I personally do not like the product, to me it is just a wide variation on the same product at a high price. Yes in the wild and naturally a horses diet is predominantly fibre based but we ask our horses to work and so they require higher levels of energy, vitamins, and minerals, fats and starch to work in the way we ant them. You can still feed naturally without only feeding alfalfa. I am intrigued at what holds the cubes together if it is not molasses as oil does not stick a cube together and heat alone will not do this either.

I use Lucie nuts and Lucie stalks with Total Eclipse. Yes, you can either soak the nuts or not. I actually soak them. Having said that there are lots of feeds out there that also require soaking.

I dont know how they stick the cube together, but can only say the feed doesnt contain mollases.
As for the work that is asked of the horse - yes agree they need feed that will give them extra energy, which the Lucie nuts are supposed to. Simple Systems contain no wheat or peas etc, which is not what a horse would eat in the wild. My mare is a good doer, and certainly does well on this feed.
Please forgive me, I'm not a food expert, I was only asked my oppinion.

I also used SS for many years for a variety of horses from a 12.2 laminitic through a fiery 14.2 Arab to a very good do-er 16.3 ID! It was great but when I moved onto a livery yard I simply didn't have the space for storage when i had to order by the palletload. Soaking/measuring was a minor pain but not too bad. I went back onto more standard feed (D&H) but have just started trialling Pure Feeds as it seems to be on the same wavelength as SS without the hassle - two of my local feed merchants stock it so can be bought as and when, or delivered if preferred. So far so good although only started on Monday!

I use SS Luci-Cob, which is pure alfalfa. It comes as little blocks that you soak, takes about 45 min to soak.

I like the idea of SS feeds because there are no hidden extras in them - I won't feed molassed food so the majority of prepared mixes/chaffs are out. I supplement myself so don't want things that are full of added vits and mins. WRT what holds the nuts together - I think their alfalfa nuts are just pure alfalfa, so I'd say they are made into nut shapes while fresh then flash dried to remove the water which would hold them together (just a guess though).

My horse isn't mad keen on SS food, takes a bit of convincing to eat it. He'll eat it if he's absolutely starving but will leave it if he has hay in the stable and would never eat it in the field. I have to put a couple of handfuls of D&H High Fibre Nuts in, then he'll eat it, so I just use it as a chaff. When this bag has gone I'm going to switch him back to Speedibeet I think, though I liked the protein levels in alfalfa.

Dirtymare....we had a Part livery here for 3 years who was on it and it took forever to make his feeds up! Different things had to be soaked and measured out. He was on lucie nuts, lucie stalks, brewers yeast, linseed, seaweed and red grass nuts. And then it looked like slop! He always took forever to eat it, and would always leave his breakfast.

With the Pure feed everything is in one bag.....all i do is grab a scoop and chuck it in a bucket, done!

Sorry Dirtymare, didnt check how my message read, not meaning to get at you about your opinion. :( That's the problem with trying to write my replies and not sound dismissive.
I have had lots of feed back from friends about Simple Systems and its a completely mixed bag. I have also heard that Pure Feeds are a good feed as well.
Personally I would prefer Pure Feeds over Simple Systems as they seem more balanced.

IMHO I had a diet done by Pure Feeds online and if you fed what they recommended it was quite expensive - I use various SS feeds as and when the need takes eg red grass pellets and Pura Beet in winter plus lucie nuts for extra energy if needed. I like the fact that there is no added molasses etc.

I was on a full livery yard that only provided SS feed and I ended up buying a different brand in eventually.

Firstly the use of the word 'Simple' makes me laugh as I found that's one thing it certainly isn't! I could never get to grips with which product was which as they all seemed to be basically the same really. In addition the soaking was a complete faff, there used to be about 20 buckets lined up against the wall in our feed room all soaking different things for different horses and once it was soaked it all looked pretty similar so noone could remember what was what :D

My friends ID cross refused to eat it at all and mine went off it over a few weeks. My fussy TB was very picky with it & my greedy eat anything cob got to the stage of leaving it completely. We even tried leaving it down for 2 days & not giving them anything else but they literally wouldn't touch it.

I have recently tried Pure Feeds and unfortunately the same thing has happened, even though it took them longer to go off it.

I use it for my two TBs and it works a treat! I find it super easy to use, no hours of soaking or measuring, chuck it in a bucket with some water and it quickly fluffs up to the consistency of haggis (Sorry, it's the only comparison I can think of!). I add a handfull of dried grass chaff to make them chew it a bit more. They get varying quantities of a mix of red nuts and pura beet in winter and red nuts alone in summer. They get a bit of Omega Rice for extra protein to boost their muscle development but nothing else.

I feed very little - much less than 1kg of hard feed per feed twice a day - and have no probs maintaining energy levels or weight, horses are shiny, calm and able to cope fine with a decent work load. It may seem expensive per bag for 'what it is' but as I don't need to feed much it works out much less expensive than other feeds I have looked into, I worked it out recently at £7.28 per week per horse for my SS and chaff and both horses are TB's that do a bit of everything and are ridden almost everyday plus competing in SJ.

I'm lucky to have a stockists a few miles away now but previously we had it delivered monthly, it wasnt ideal but the horses were so good on it it was worth it.
