I tried some for a couple of days on the tubby one….it seemed it sent him absolutely bananas. Now I know alfalfa can have this effect on some horses, but I was quite surprised at his reaction to it - he’s never had Lucerne before, virtually to the point of unrideable. Who’d have thought a quiet hack down a quiet country lane would have resulted in total meltdown He’s PRE so can be a bit ‘hot’ anyway when out for a hack sometimes, but I was tackenaback at his extreme reaction.
Does anyone successfully feed their Iberian(s) alfalfa without massive dramas?
And has anyone else experienced anything similar with SS metaslim?

My Connemara has had Metaslim as a balancer for years. It is particularly good for ponies with EMS and Insulin Resistance. It has been fantastic for her as a supplement for being fed soaked hay and having her grazing restricted. I haven’t noticed any effects on her behaviour but she is generally a laid back sort.

My native cant have any alfalfa so Metaslim was out as he goes sky high so I feed SS Purabeet with cinnamon (as cinnamon has been found to help weight loss and is in Metaslim).

Is he a cob ?! I think cobs can be super sensitive to alfalfa , I only use Thunder brooks now as free from anything!
He’s PRE, so quite sensitive. I bought him some Thunderbrooks grass nuts once, they were lovely alpine grass nuts and I thought I’d treat him to some…..they sent him nuts too. He’s currently on soaked meadow hay and fibre nuts - this seems to work for him.

A respected forumite had those analyse once and they are full of legumes, of which alfalfa/lucerne is one.

They made my horse photosensitive, and he was also one who went crazy on alfalfa.

Do you think just adding cinnamon to their feed would help? I don’t really want to change my feed but if it would help weight loss it might be worth just adding cinnamon to my current feed

Never tried SS metaslim but all my horses including two PRE's over the years eat simple system lucie nuts and equidgel (also alfalfa based) without any issues. It's always down to the individual though!

I do think it does seem to help - I also feed magnesium too as that can help with the reduction of fat build up/fat pads :)

Pony stayed a reasonably good weight despite 3 months off, so I think it did something as I expected him to balloon. He put a bit on but definitely less than I had expected.
