I would like some feeding advice for my mare she is riding 6 warmblood 16 hh hot mare ridden 4 days a week 1 day competing 1 day lesson 2 days hacking.

My current feeding plan is Simple systems 1/2 scoop lucy nuts twice a day
purabeet 1/2 scoop twice a day, 1 scoop of greengold twice a day and 200g of linseed. 18lb of hay she wont eat hay if I put it in the field.

this week I have ditched the greengold and upped the lucy nuts and purabeet to 1scoop .

(Stubbs round scoop)

She has been on this for 2 months and I have seen a little weight gain but not mega from 515 kg to 520 kg weight tape before she was on dengi hifi 1 scoop and calm and condition 1 scoop 2 twice a day with hay.

I want her to put on more weight so she has a good covering .

I'm considering changing to cool copra plus alfa oil or no4 baylies plus alfa oil or topspec conditioning cube plus alfa oil.

the only thing i find when feeding ss soaked feed once soaked the volume is massive is this really that good for them there stomach is only the size of a rugby ball and can only get down there twice a day so cant split them into 3.

All your advice would be much appreciated x x x x

My boy struggles to keep weight on was feeding three feeds a day of Alfa a oil prep 14 and blue chip dynamic. Switched to copra cool stance about 6 weeks ago and changed to spillers conditioning chaff and will never change. He looks the best he has looked for this time of year. Also not having to feed the quantities of feed as before great stuff x

The simple systems is fibre, which is fermented in the hind gut, so it doesn't matter if the feeds are big - it doesn't need to be digested fully in the stomach before passing through. If you switch to something starchy like baileys no 4 (barge.pole) this would change.

Copra is very popular, and fibre based so more horse friendly than starchy conditioning feeds. Many horses require an introduction period before they'll eat it, but once that's done it seems to be very palatable.

I'm not a fan of lucerne myself, though.

I feed it with Speedibeet and Linseed to tb and a warmblood who doesn't hold weight that well

About 3/4 scoop of Speedibeet (dry) and between 200g and 500g of Copra split between two feeds. I have upped the Copra to almost a kg when I have needed to. I have also fed it alongside Alfalfa pellets.

So pretty much the equivalent of your purabeet or Lucie nuts.

I feed copra meal its brilliant stuff. I fed it to a fizzy youngster, a good doer competition pony and a hyper shetland. All look great on it, didn't fizz anyone up and but weight on in the right places for those who needed it! Youngster who needed to.put in weight I fed 1 big stubbs scoop, competition pony 1 small scoop and shetland got a tiny bit. I fed with alfa a and equilibra x

Have you thought about Simple Systems Top Nosh? I have been using this over winter for the last 3 years with success on my TB who until this winter lived out all year.

Hi yes I rang them and they told me to change to what I started feeding this week I asked about the top nosh and they said I could but cause I'm feeding the linseed it won't make loads of difference x

I may be being a bit thick and get that it is digested in the hind gut but it still has to pas through the stomach first it just seems such a large amount:confused:

The size of the stomach is only relevant if it is important that a feed has been digested to a certain level before it leaves. Do you place restriction on how much hay your horse is allowed to eat at any one time, due to the size of its stomach? It's the same with other fibre :). If the feed is mixed with cereals or other energy sources it's different, but fibre can be fed ad lib.

Thank you for explaining that for me I've been trying to google it for days and nothing has come up only that it should be small meals so couldn't get my head around it. Thanks again x

Gryfiss I feed a mug of copra twice a day made with warm water and a scoop of fibre. He has more sparkle than before and loves the feed nearly knocks the door down for it. I make it with warm water x

I've just started feeding Copra coolstance this week(from Monday) to my rising 22 year old as she had lost weight this winter. at the beginning of the week i could see her ribs(which is how i want her at the end of winter) and now she is now nicely covered again and i can just feel her ribs. When the spring grass comes through i would like to be able to just see her ribs so she can put some weight on over the summer with out me having to worry to much. Having used it for a week i would recommend it and my girl seems to love it.
