seen that quite a few people on here use SS and it seems that its all good things said about it. is it value for money feeding? how much do you spend? which procuct do you use and why does it suit you and your horse? does any one use it for ponies? i have 13hh welsh cross.

sorry twenty questions but im in a real feeding rut at the momemt? so many to choose from!

Its not the cheapest feed, but is on par with most other good brands.

I use their non mollassed sugar beet in the winter. In the summer i use speedi beet as I only use it occassionaly.
I also use ruff stuff - a high fibre grass chop, Lucy stalks - another high fibre chop, more akin to straw chaff, lucy nuts - pellets of lucerne/alphalpha and total eclipse feed balancer.

Thay are all healthy and happy with lovely coats and hooves. The only downside is that its not very sweet, so some horse may need to be weaned off their old feed.

I started to use use it because I have an older TB x who got fizzy on most brands of feed with cereals and mollasses and looses weight in the winter if she is on hay alone. I can also use it confidently for my young full TB without worrying about blowing her brain. I can also use it for my fatties (welsh A and shetland x)

The TB & old TB x have SB, nuts and chaff,. I alternate twixt lucy stalk and ruff stuff for a bit of variety. The young TB has a higher ratio of SB and nuts to chaff than the oldie.

My two fatties both have just chaff and sugar beet. In the summer they all have much less - more of a token feed for their feed balancer

I have an elderly clydesdale and an young gypsy cob.

They both have lucie stalks and green gold. Cairo had more stalks and Chancer more green gold in their feeds as Cairo needs to be kept light for his joints and Chancer is still growing.

They also get linseed - for old C's joints and show condition for young C. I feed brewers yeast for sweet itch.

In additon they do get black sunflower seeds, speedibeet - Chancer didn't agree with their version and hilight cubes in their balls. The grass nuts are normally too fattening for mine, though I did use them to put weight and spark (red bag ones) on Chancer when he needed a little more for showing and they were scoffed down so very tasty.

Both of mine look great on it and I love being able to feed huge tubs of low cal food which is nothing more than pure fibre with nothing else added that I don't know about.

i believe id need to order in bulk? im in scotland and hadnt even heard of ss until i joined this forum so im presuming its not widely used up here.

giving big fibre feeds is appealing as my pony seems to have gone off hay, im in the middle of some trial and error to see whats going on with that, would give me piece of mind if i was giving him a small haynet but a large amount of feed.

I like the idea of SS but was put off by the bulk ordering. I'm able to get Dengie AlfaBeet from my local feedmerchant which is a combination of unmolassed alfafa and unmolassed beet, so similar to SS, which I use as the basis of my horses' diets.

The very best thing you can do is phone them up. They ask you lots of questions about your horse/pony and taylor made a feed regime to suit your needs.

If you live near a distributor you can buy as much or as little as you like.

If you don't like talking on the phone send them an email. Tell them all about your pony, temperament, work load, how you keep him etc.

Again, had not heard of SS until this forum but we use a feed called Fibre Gold - it is a long chop complete feed that contains probiotic and yea sacc and alfalfa, grass nuts and lots of great stuff with no grain.................takes them ages to eat it and makes the chew properly. Has saved me a fortune in hay/hayledge as I put the equivalent of 2 nets in each per night and used to have nothing left, but after swapping onto this feed, there is about half a net left - nutritionalist said it was because it took longer to eat and was slower to digest therefore they were satisfied for longer.

£10.55 for a bag and they do Easy Lite, Worker and Stud Blend.

Jude.
