Hi,

I'm just about to move my horse from full livery to DIY, and will need to buy her feed (haven't done this for over a year!). The YO has told me she's currently feeding her alfa-a, pasture mix and a tiny amount of sugarbeet.

Did anyone read the article in your horse about feeding economically? Simple Systems purabeet came out the cheapest. Does anyone on here feed their horses Simple Systems and if so what do you use?

I have a 15hh 9yr old welsh D mare who is a good doer and lives out. She's also on haylage in the field at the mo, I will give her hay when I move her.

Any advice/feedback welcomed!
 
I feed Simple Systems to about 11 horses of different types/weights/ work levels. I have fed it for about 12 years. if a horse is living out through winter, then to be honest you need fibre fibre and more fibre to ensure she stays warm. I would probably just give hay/haylage and a handful of lucinuts as a feed, adding in some purabeet to increase the volume as the weather gets colder. I would add in Brewers Yeast to ensure you have the correct gut flora and vitamins/minerals and linseed to ensure she has support for her joints and her coat.
 
The most economical, natural and fibre-filled foods you can feed are grass and hay! They go unnoticed sometimes because they don't have copywriters drafting lots of hype and bumph about them! If your mare is a good doer and only in light work she probably doesn't need much more - if you are worried about whether she is getting all her vit/mins just give her a vit/min supplement in a handful of chaff.

I started feeding mine simple systems about 3 months ago. My mare, who is about 14 yrs old, 15hh and a cobby type, gets lucie nuts, red grass nuts (for a bit of oommph!), pura beet and total eclipse powder. I have to say she looks fab on it.

My young boy is just getting some lucie nuts, purabeet, a handful of lucie stalks and the total eclipse, and my little pony just gets the lucie stalks (to make her feel like she is getting something!) and the total eclispe.

They all look in really good condition and love the food, although I think it actually works out more expensive than the 'ready made' feeds.

Whilst I can afford it, mine will stay on it though.
 
Farra - 4 year old still growing clydesdale in light work - Just Grass, brewyers yeast, instant linseed.

Chancer - 4 year old, still growing gypsy cob in light/med work. Green Gold, brewyers yeast, instant linseed

I also feed black sunflower seeds and use speedibeet. I found Chancer was a bit lively on their one and no reason for it.

Cairo the old clydie used to have lucie stalks.

Mine have done very well on this system, it certainly agrees with them. I also feed them ad lib hay when they are in.
 
It is good stuff but despite what Your Horse magazine say's you can buy the equivilant products cheaper from normal feed stores ie Speedy Beet, Grass Nuts, Alfa products etc.
 
My two were introduced to Simple Systems in March 08 and initially they weren't keen I think this was because it is a lot wetter than the feeds they were use to, this is due to it all being soaked, but now they cant seem to get enough of it!
Dont know what they are on as I have them on livery, but they both look and are a figure of health!
It is also a thing of convenience as it's all basically condenced grass you can feed literally just before or after exercise, and you can just up and down the feeds depending on how your horse looks and goes - you cant really go wrong.
 
I am a total convert to the Simple System way.

Does anyone have their 2009 calendar? If so check out Mr January, he lives in my back garden!!!

I have swopped from Alpha A Oil to Lucinuts - I hate additives in things and Alpha A Oil has preservatives in it, lucinuts don't. I soak a mix of lucinuts and speedibeet as well as feeding brewers yeast and instant linseed. Both my boys look fab on it. I am considering moving on to either alphabeet or fibrebeet which is the same (alfalfa and sugarbeet). I'm not sure of the price difference though so will look into it.

A few people at my yard have commented how well my horses look considering how little I feed them!
 
Well i fed SS feeds for 2 years & i will never go back to it!! My oldie lost so much condition & i really tried with the advise of SS i tried nearly everything. My WB never had enough energy on SS so i eventually swapped to Winergy & life is much better & less hassle!!

I like the concept of SS but for me i was far from simple & also SS is expensive.
