Just thought I would put a post on to see if there are many single mums out there trying to cope with keeping a horse?

I got my horse a few years ago (before my husband decided to have an affair aarrrgghhh!) Oh well, anyway I am now on my own and have to cope with 2 kids and keep my horse.

Most months I really don't know how I afford it let alone have the time to do him, he is on DIY and I really struggle to afford it all, I really have to budget, can't go to shows, can't afford transport, can't afford any extra livery so do favours for other liveries in return for days 'in the bank' so to speak when they can help me back. Don't have any family to help out with child care or financially. I do have weeks and months when I think that's it I just can't cope and I shall have to sell him, but I don't go out in the evenings, buy new clothes, have my nails done, a mate cuts my hair etc so surely I am allowed some sort of pleasure in life? Some people think I am well off for some reason as I have a horse, I would go without food myself if it meant that I could pay the livery! But they don't understand, am I mad??!!!!

Thankfully my horse is a cob so lives on fresh air, but when I am feeling really fed up and have had a C*&p day at work I go to the yard and even if I don't have time to ride just seeing my horse and being around him makes all the struggle worth while! Does anyone else feel the same or in the same boat?

i was a single mum and know how hard it is, people do think that your loaded though just cos you got a horse, i sometimes wonder how i manage to afford to keep mine but at least its the cheapest time of year though, keep your chin up and you will manage.

Me too!!
I have to say my horse is far less trouble than my teenage daughter.
It's hard work, i have a full time job, a warmblood that is stabled every night because he is a big girls blouse, and he's a poor doer so eats enough to keep a small country going.
Not bought myself any new clothes since i can't remember when. Not been on a night out since before christmas but...
Like the others though i wouldn't have it any other way
