Single or double IW horse trailer.

I only ever travel one horse, I have a IW double horse trailer that I am thinking of updating. My horse travels full width and I was wondering if a single would be worth looking at, what are your thoughts?
 
It's definitely worth considering. The narrower trailer and lower weight would be much easier to tow and enable you to have a smaller car if required.
I wondered whether to go single or double when I bought my trailer.
In the end I went for a double as I wanted the extra head height offered in the 510, but if your horse is 16hh or under and you have a 505 this wouldn't be a consideration.
The single stall is much wider than half of a double so would give more room that way. Only other thing I can think of is see if you could hire a single first to make sure your horse loads ok, they do look a bit narrower and less inviting if you have an iffy loader.
 
I have an IW single trailer and love it. I only have a Freelander so could only tow one horse at a time anyway so went for a IW401. I find it so easy to tow as I know that it is no wider than my car which makes negotiating narrow lanes and gateways much easier. There is plenty of room in them, I can walk down the side of my horse when he's in there and even tack up in there if need be. My boy is a good loader but I find with others it is a more inviting space than a double with partitions in.
My boy is 15.3hh and has plenty of head room, the only thing I would say is, as mentioned above' if you have a big horse you may need the extra headroom in the 510/511 that they don't offer in the single.

Are you restricted by only having a B licence or do you have B+E ?
 
See if it was me I always look on the fact that bigger is better lol. Plus you always have the option of taking someone with you if going out nice to have the option of company sometimes. I can see the benefit of just having a single what with towing car etc. My own horse is only 15.2 but I went for a ifor 510 as she can be a pickle to load so the more room the better plus my friends horse is 16.3 so means he fits in no problem when we go out together.

I passed my test in 1989 so well before the trailer test became compulsory, my car is a X5 3L petrol and tows really well just very thirsty! I was just thinking of my options and I have seen a couple of really nice single trailers for sale.
 
I love my HB401. I only have a 13.2 in it and pull it with a 2Litre car. What I like most is that it isn't wider than the car so I don't have to worry about the width of the trailer when towing.
 
Thank you for you replies, as I only ever trailer one horse a single really does seem to be an option. My horse is 15h HW Cob. I am pleased to hear that you can still tack up in a single as that's what I do nowwhen we get to places he likes to come out of the trailer and go. My car is a BMW X5 and it tows my double with ease even up the steepest of hills so a single would be no problem at all. He loads and unloads well so that's no a concern for me. You don't see many singles around so I was just curious to the thoughts and experience of others.
 
I love my single Ifor! It's only 6" narrower on each side than the 505 so plenty of room inside. I have a 15.3 tb and can spread out and stand whereas in my 505, she was always scraping the walls trying to move her legs. I towed in high winds and heavy rain when I went to my last show in it as it was a sudden storm, trailer was rock solid.

What a timely thread! I'm in the market for a single too, so this is all good to know. So far the trailers I've seen for singles have been really expensive though; I need to hire a single first to see if madam will go in.

FW I don't suppose your friend's single is the one on preloved in Linlithgow? If so, it's a lovely trailer and just the right colour for me, it's a shame it'd be a 5 hour drive :(
 
Another vote for the single trailers! I have an IW401 and my horse loves it and travels far better than in a double with partition. You can tack up inside with plenty of space too x
 
Have a ifor 401 and its very inviting for the horse to load. I do cross tie as otherwise he can turn round. I tow with a subaru forester. They are as rare as hens teeth though and hang onto their price. I put a wanted on Facebook horse site and was offered one. We did have to drive a distance.
 
The reason the singles are rare to get hold of and hold their price is that they can be down plated for B towing as long as the manufacturer is still trading and the driver has the right vehicle

There are now so many drivers who passed after 1996 that they do not have the free B+E so a B licence towing set up for one horse has become very popular
