Single trailer - Can i tow without a B+E licence?

Hi there

Im looking to get my first trailer in the next year or so. I will be getting a single trailer probably an Ifor 403, I will also be swapping my car for a 4X4.

I have heard that if your box and car is light enough etc you can stay within the limit? There was lost of things about MAM's and other words i didn't fully understand ha ha! So id love someone to decode this language for me if possible?

Im not saying that i will not take my test but I am just wondering :)

My horse weighs about 560kg and i know you must take into account tack, water, people etc to the overall weight.
The gross weight for the Ifor 4013 is 1600kg and unladen it is 767kg.

Taking into account all this, what cars would be suitable to tow and legally stay within the limit? (If this is possible)

When did you pass your test? If it was very recently you may not even be able to whatever the sums.

Just seen your edit. Rules changed I think in Jan 2013 where you could only tow 750kg
 
so far the other two posters have given incorrect info (but at least they did not say it was legally correct) so please go to the link I posted with the correct legal info

Any car under 1900kg MAM as you are allowed to tow a trailer and car with a combined MAM up to 3500kg whenever you passed your test after 1/1/97

The only rule change I was aware of after 1/1/2013 was that for unbraked trailer as before you could tow a trailer under 750kg unbraked with any vehicle up to 3500kg MAM However this does not affect you .
You will only be able to have a vehicle that has an unladen weight of 1600kg as the vehicles unladen weight has to be greater than the MAM of the trailer. so thats a very narrow choice I believe so one option if to get the trailer plated with a lower MAM to open up the options dropping it to 1400kg would give you more scope as it effectively adds 400kg to the vehicle window ie the difference between the unladen weight and MAM

Out of date piece of info - that was revoked in full on 19/01/2013 for all B licence holders
 
In answer to the thread question - Can i tow without a B+E licence? - the answer is a big YES, many on here do so, but ....... with one extra rule on top of the usual towing laws which is -

- The plated GVW of vehicle added to trailer plated MAM must not add up to more than 3500kg
