Having trawled the interent for hours without any luck could any H&H readers help me out??!!! Im looking for a trailer for my 17hh but really only wanted a single - are there any out there?? The new Ifor Williams single is recommended for only upto 16.2hh, any other ideas? As im towing with a freelander i wanted to keep weight to a minimum and will certainly never have the funds to own more than one horse!! Thanks in advance x

I haven't heard of anyone who makes a single trailer that big - sorry

I wondered whether such a thing was available too.

Having had a very, very quick look at the Bockman, I have a query though. The tech spec says total weight is 1600kg and payload 840kg. What does that mean?

A. 1600 is the weight of the trailer and it will take 840kg
B. The total it can take including it's own weight is 1600kg.
C. The trailer is 840kg and it can take up to a max 1600kg (which is very similar to B when I think about it!)

If it's A then a Freelander won't be able to tow. B and C Freelander should just about be OK providing you don't overload the car too!

Ive had a look in the dictionary and payload seems to be the weight that something can carry, in which case A seems to be the answer - however 1600kg seems awfully heavy for a single horse trailer. Ludi_doodi have you towed using a Freelander? Ive got my B+E training next week and then was planning to tow an Ifor 510 with 1 horse. A freelander will tow 1800kg braked, and an Ifor's 1000kg unloaded. With just the one horse i should be ok don't you think?

Thanks for the Bockmann link Castlemouse - had never heard of them before, just requested a brochure :-)

Hi - yes I have towed with a Freelander. It was 1.8 petrol and to be honest it was dreadful for towing. From memory I think they are able tow up to about 2,000kg which if the Bockmak trailer is 1600kg (as you say it's very, very heavy for any trailer, never mind a single!) it doesn't leave you a lot for horse and other things you may need to carry.

If the IFOR is 1000kg and horse is say 500kg you will be OK in the Freelander but you could struggle up hills for instance. Don't forget that in addition to the trailer/horse your car will be loaded up with people/tack/water etc which all add to the weight that the car is carrying and pulling.

Personally, I wouldn't use a single horse trailer, let alone for a horse of that size. Why can't you use a double horse trailer? Any particular reason?

To be honest as i'm only towing with a freelander it is purely a weight issue, plus i'll never have the funds to own more than one horse so just eager to know of any out there - the dimensions of the single Bockmann are huge so size, if i was to go with one of them, doesn't look to be a problem.

Get a bateson - only around 800kg empty, plus 1 17hh horse at around 600kg, should be ok for your towing weight with a freelander.
