Anyone experienced an infection post op with their horse?

I'm a little concerned now, praying that the cysts haven't regrown. I really hope she doesn't need further surgery.

The whole cyst capsule was removed, so that really shouldn't be what's happened. Just seems a little strange to be getting an infection so long after surgery. I'd have expected it within the first 10 days.

Her lymph nodes are up on the left side (the sinus operated on) but she appears well in herself.

Vet is going to re-evaluate her condition on Monday.

Oh golly. Can't help I'm afraid, but fingers crossed there's no infection there and she mends very quickly.

My horse had a tooth out under GA via a bone flap with trephines into both sinuses so not the same thing but wanted to say he had reccuring infections for about 2 yrs post op. They recurred every few months and were treated with antibiotics and trephines at first then just antibiotics. He still every now and then gets a snotty discharge and that awful smell but fingers crossed it goes away after a couple of days without treatment.
If you are concerned I would get the vet as you may need some more antibiotics.

I did get the vet yesterday. That's how I know it's a sinus infection.

She's on a course of oral antibiotics for now (she's a bugger for injecting) with the hope that it will clear it up.

She's being reviewed on Monday. Not sure what the next stage will be if she still has the discharge. There is no smell with hers though, just exactly the same as it was before she was admitted to Leahurst and had her surgery.

How worrying that you continued to have infection problems for so long post surgery. I have not been prepared (more likely warned) that could be a possible "side effect".

Oh well. Here's hoping it sorts out soon enough.

P's own surgery was done in a very minimally invasive fashion. Her caudal maximus sinus (I think that's what they said) was entered via a trephine bore hole and the cysts cut away with the endoscope. She just had drain holes under her eye....no actual bone flap. I'm really pleased cosmetically with the result.

Hopefully it's nothing more than a 'routine' post op infection, and nothing more sinister.

keep us updated - I know how worried you must be... ((((( )))))

Thanks AmyMay.

I'm sure I'm being a drama queen...I just hope she comes out of this without requiring more surgery.

One step forwards.....two steps back and all that.

Your hugs, as always, are much appreciated.

To be anything less post op would be entirely irresponsible.

Oh Patches, you are NOT being a drama queen! You are just doing the best for your horse, at a time when she needs lots of extra care and attention.

Fingers crossed everything is ok and that she has a healthy and speedy recovery

I know just how you feel, I was so down about it as although I was warned, everything had gone so well I just didnt think it would happen. My boy had the injections too but they didnt work and they swabbed the discharge as the AB werent shifting it. I was pretty much told this was how it could be for ever! Then some nice person told me a horror story about a horses face rotting away. I was mortified. Vet said it was scare mongering.
Please keep positive, I know its hard but Im sure everything will be fine.

How is your horse doing?

My boy has had several sinus ops before I had him. I sent him to Newmarket where he had a GA and a cracked tooth removed. Vets were surprised he'd never had it removed before as it was likely to be what had been causing the abcesses in his sinus. He'd had problems for at least 7 years by that point. After the op which I had done he kept getting infections, masses of anti-biotics. In the end what sorted it out was an anti-fungal wash being flushed through the sinus. He has been so much better since then.

She's on Trimediazine at the moment. The nasal discharge seems to be subsiding, whether it will stay that way once she's off the powders I've no idea.

She has a space (diastema?) between upper left 9 and 10. Vet said they were sure this was a coincidence as the cysts were pretty clear on the endoscope in sinus.
