As you know, my pony horse had a tooth out the hard way.

I saw him today and could smell him before I saw him! He has a creamy discharge from his nostril and his breath stinks. He has sinusitis, am getting antibiotics from the vet tomorrow.

Anybody had dealings with sinusitis please?

Am worried sick. Thanks.

Oh no....poor pony. Ive had a horse with lots of sinus problems over the last 18 months on and off.

Last year she had antibiotics which didnt work, so then she had a hole made in her skull to drain the fluid and I had to flush with antiseptic twice daily....that didnt work so then she had more antibiotics then another sinus flush...month later still wasnt cleared so she had bone flap surgery which cleared it up for 11 months, for it to come back last month.

I am taking her to see Henry Tremaine (specialist in this area) 2moro for his expertise as they werent sure if it was an infected tooth root which may be the cause.....so she may need it taking out.....but obviously that then creates risk of further sinus infections as you have found out with your pony. So i can tell im gonna find it hard to make a decision about whether to take the tooth out or not!!!

Try not to worry about your pony....gotta give the antibiotics a chance to work. The last sinus infection my horse had was cleared up within 5 days of antibiotics, so providing youve caught it early you stand every chance of it getting better with antibiotics.

Oh many thanks pretty bay. I am so sorry to hear about your pony, they are such delicate creatures despite their size and strength.

My horse had his tooth removed and from the sounds of it, sinusitis is almost expected.

after 1 day of antibiotics I noticed a difference.

I very much hope that all went well with your pony, let me know how she gets on.

My 18 year old mare seems to have developed sinusitis, too. She had a first visit from the vet last week, and has had 5 days of antibiotics (injected everyday, Norodine is a definite no no!) then today I took her to the clinic. The puss is dribbling down one nostril only, it has had a little bit of blood in it too. Seemed to be clearing a little today, wasn't so thick and yellow, also not so stinky (although I may be getting used to it!). Anyway, they scoped both nostrils, couldn't find anything obvious, just lots of gunk in the affected nostril. Teeth expert at vets had a good look at her teeth - again, nothing wrong there. So she had xrays which really only showed lots of puss! No cysts or growths found so far. So they have drilled a little hole through her skull (under sedation and local anesthetic) just to the side of her eye, and are going to try flushing it all out. Throughout she has been totally herself, has been eating normally etc. I hope she responds well to this treatment, the vet said, all being well, she can come home between Christmas and the New Year but we will have to continue flushing out!

Hello Pretty Bay...
My horse has been through exactly the same thing as yours, he had the bone flap surgery for the second time last week at the RVC with Justin Perkins..(my horse has previously had 2 ops on this)
We had the first bone flap op done a months ago... and the side of his head started to swell.. so we were referred to the rvc... for a ct scan to show wether it was a tooth problem that caused all this... ct showed that there was a change in the 6th tooth.. but Justin didnt believe this was the cause of the sinusitis.. and he said he wouldnt remove that tooth.. on a young horse.
We are home now, and ths sinus is flushing well..
How did your 2nd bone flap op go? success?

Ive added some pics of what my horse has dealt with so far.

WARNING....THEY ARE GORY!
